After my friend Amy’s visit and our fun time at the Balloon Fiesta, John and I took another quick trip back to Tucson to check on the remodel again (this commute is getting to be a big pain in the butt). It had been three weeks since we had gone out in September, and we couldn’t really tell that there had been much progress. Here’s where we were as of October 8.
A little bit more tile had been installed. The tile looks great, although it’s hard to notice past all the stuff that isn’t done yet.
The new sliding doors and the new back door to the garage had already been in for awhile, and are still not trimmed yet.
This next picture is the sliding glass door from the main bedroom suite out to the backyard. We’re going to try to do a minimal trim around it rather than slapping big clunky 1×4’s all around the edges. But obviously that orange filler foam is going to need to be covered up. (This photo is from standing outside looking in; the pool is just reflecting in the glass.)
Look – an incorporated doggie door in the lower corner! It looks small, but our only choices were small or huge. Biska is full grown at 25 pounds, so as long as we don’t go and adopt a big dog, we’re good.
The next photo is the new sliding glass door from the back porch to the family/dining area. We got a 8″ wide slider, which is significantly larger than the one it is replacing. We were able to enlarge the opening fairly easily because this is one of the few exterior walls that’s not adobe brick. It’s not brick because it was originally an Arizona room with no back wall. Then when it was enclosed at some point, they just used drywall and wood siding. That made it easier for us to expand the opening. Eventually we plan to stucco the back wall, which will look better with the brick walls than the siding does. I assume stucco would be cheaper than bricking it, although bricking it is an option. My contractor thinks we can still get that burnt adobe brick, even though it’s not usually used anymore. It would be nice if we could get it in 3″ thick rather than 6″, because we would want to retain the stick framing in order to add insulation. Our 6″ thick brick adobe walls have no insulation because there is no hollow wall space to put it into.
I don’t know what to call this room that goes out onto the back patio. We’ve taken to calling it the Arizona room because that’s what it was originally, before this back wall was installed. The previous owners had their refrigerator here (because there was no place for it in the kitchen) and they had a couch pushed awkwardly across half the entryway.
When we moved in, at first it we made it John’s office because it was his favorite room in the house. He loved the interior brick walls, unpainted beam ceilings, and he liked working in the main part of the house near the patio. But when he’s having conference calls all day, I feel inhibited about clattering away in the kitchen. That’s when we decided to make it a dining room. It would make an excellent dining room, but I’d also really like to have a family room near the kitchen. If it were just John and I, we don’t really need both a family room and a living room. But I have some non-dog-friendly (and non-kid-friendly) furniture, artwork, house plants, and my handpan that I would like to keep in the living room, that I can close off with French doors.
I’d like to have a more casual, kid and dog friendly space with a TV near the kitchen/dining area. My husband needs TV time with the dog! (Since the poor guy can rarely get me sat down to watch TV with him.) That means a dog-friendly couch. Plus my little nieces need a peanut-butter-friendly couch in front of a TV! (Right, Emily?)
So now we’ve been talking about making the Arizona room into a family room, which means I would not have a separate dining room. There’s room to put the dining table in the open part of the kitchen, close to where we had it originally, which would mean I wouldn’t also have a breakfast nook. I don’t actually need a dining room and a breakfast nook. We really just need one table. Although I have a second dining table that I’d like to find a place for, somewhere. Tables are always so handy – but this house is not large.
Meanwhile, the new cabinets had been moved in from the garage and unpacked, but not installed.
We continue to be very pleased with the color of the new cabinets up against the new floor tile. They are soft, warm, earthy colors without just being beige, beige, and more beige. Beige has become dated, but the cool grays, blacks & whites that everyone else is installing right now doesn’t match our casual southwest, rustic, Mexican, and handmade furniture and artwork. With these earth tones I think our southwest style decor will match the house, without having to resort to splashing bright primary colors on the walls or something over-the-top like that.
It’s a challenge trying to remodel in a style that’s not popular – it’s hard to find materials – there’s just not a lot of choices. The primary style right now is a minimalistic gray-tone, simple, cool and sparse. John hates that style – it’s not warm and homey. And I don’t want to have to replace all our New Mexico style furniture and artwork!
It’s coming together. And best of all, the new window is in! I love the new window! It’s expensive and difficult to put new windows in adobe brick due to support issues. But we had one spot where a new window would be easy – this nicho on the outside of the house.
Part of me was reluctant to remove a traditional and authentic detail. This nicho with an electric outlet was built to hold a religious statue that lights up at night. I’m personally all in favor of cultural appropriation, but we didn’t want a lighted figurine of a Catholic saint in our front yard. I realized that the existing brickwork would make installing a much-needed living room window a cinch.

It faces east and will get the morning light. The palm tree shades it and provides privacy from the street. We are on a corner, so we have two street sides. We intend to continue to add landscaping for increased privacy, because we like to leave the blinds open during the day, and we have a lot of people walking by on their way to the bike path that’s nearby.
I don’t think I’ll put a blind on this window for daily use, but I have a few artsy ideas for in case we do want to occasionally block it when we’re away. Or if we’re using the living room to accommodate extra guests during the holidays.
These photos are from when we were out there a week ago. We continue to be discouraged by the slow progress even though we are happy with the quality of what’s been done so far. We decided we should go out more regularly to keep a better eye on things, even though it’s a big trip. We’re going to go again this coming weekend, so I should have updated photos next week. Hopefully there will be more progress to report. I am getting excited about moving back to Tucson and trying not to be impatient!
Remember how we were having countertop woes? Our fabricator-install guy said he put a “hold” on the countertop we wanted in Phoenix, but then he quit answering our phone calls. We waited anxiously for awhile, but when I noticed online that the countertop suddenly went on clearance, we called the slab yard. Turns out the “hold” was basically meaningless because the slabs hadn’t been paid for. Anybody could buy them at any point. Then what would we do?
We were still in Seattle, or maybe on our way to Montana, but wherever we were, it was nowhere near Phoenix. We debated – should one of us fly down to Phoenix to look at the countertop in person, or should we just buy it over the phone with a credit card?
We had managed to figure out we needed three slabs. Or at least I think we do – we are hoping that’s correct. We still don’t actually have a fabricator. We did not know how long it was going to take to find a fabricator. So should we hold off on buying anything and keep trying to find a new fabricator, or just buy it sight unseen from the internet pictures?
They don’t actually like selling slab sight unseen (for obvious reasons) and discouraged me when I had called from Seattle looking into the possibility. But I had looked at so many slabs for so many months that I felt like I knew what we wanted.
After all, we’ve bought houses sight unseen. If we can buy a house without looking at it first, we can definitely buy three slabs of quartzite. And the only time we’ve backed out of a contract was due to a serious issue that arose during inspections – such as the septic failure in Placitas in 2017.)
I knew the slab was good enough. We didn’t want “amazing”, we wanted something with a natural feel that would blend well with the burnt adobe brick, the terracotta floor tiles, and the cabinets we had already purchased.
I didn’t want someone else to buy it, particularly now that it was on clearance. I had looked at hundreds of slabs, some in person, many on the internet and I had not been able to find anything that we both liked that was the right colors to go with the other materials in the kitchen.
We weighed our options, pulled together our courage, and bought the slabs over the phone. And they let us do it! When John called he kind of implied, without actually saying it, that I had seen the slabs. “Yes, I’m calling to buy the slabs that my wife picked out…” Lol. They gave him the clearance price too.
About two weeks later, on our way back to Albuquerque after getting my CT scan done in Tucson, we stopped by Phoenix to see the slabs we had bought. They were actually very difficult to see in the noon glare. But they seemed fine. They were exactly what I was expecting except – in my mind I didn’t blow them up big enough.
We’re used to seeing small internet pictures of household sized items. But this was a small internet picture of something very, very large. In my mind I had blown the pattern up a few times – but these slabs are something like 10 feet long by over 6 feet wide. They are huge! I knew that intellectually, but it was still hard to picture. So the pattern was less condensed than I had imagined.

It was very squinty and hard to see.
Bottom line is we’re not really going to know what it looks like until after it’s installed. And then we’re going to have to like it! Or learn to like it. Because we are not going to be changing it!
It should be fine. It has a slight bluish-greenish tinge in places to tie in with the sage-gray cabinet, and rust streaks to tie in with the terracotta tile. And it’s a natural stone, so it looks and feels natural. And the pattern isn’t too crazy. I think it will be perfect.
Speaking of crazy patterns, John had to get his photo in front of this monstrosity.
In addition to being drastically ugly (the quartzite, not my husband), this slab is enormously expensive. Don’t worry, we didn’t spend even a fraction of that amount per slab on our quartzite.
I guess it’s beautiful in an artistic way, but can you imagine having to process that before you’ve had your coffee in the morning? It’s a bit of a visual assault. It would wake you up, that’s for sure. I’d be like, “Eh, mind already blown enough for the morning; I don’t think I need any coffee after all”.
Oh, and no, we’re not using that greenish octagon backsplash John’s holding. Or at least not in the kitchen. Maybe in the bathroom around the tub, but it’s not calm enough for the kitchen.
When we went to Tucson for my scan, we stayed in a rented Airbnb because we knew our house was too torn up to live in.
When we stopped by our house to take a look at how the remodel was progressing, it was hard to see it in such a state.
Yes, we did this by choice, but it’s still upsetting to see. If we had seen this house on the market and it looked this way we would never have bought it. And then we go and do this to our house ourselves!
Even our yard is trashed.
Remember there was a flood when our contractor was demolishing the old kitchen? Not only was it “not his fault”, he also didn’t do anything to try to save our stuff. Fragile items were just laying around and spilling out of half-opened, soggy boxes. All our cookbooks are ruined. A flokati rug was ruined. Everything was such a mess.
This was not how everything was packed. John and I are neat, careful packers. The wet boxes were just dragged and tossed around by our contractors.
We didn’t want any further damage done, so John got some more boxes and quickly repacked everything, regardless of condition. We’ll just have to sort it through later and replace what isn’t salvageable.
Now it’s something about hot water and fully corroded galvanized pipes and something rusted through and breaking off. He barely touched it, he swears! It was a disaster waiting to happen; we’re luckily he caught it in time!
Every time my contractor calls, he’s like: IT’S NOT MY FAULT! Apparently the kitchen keeps disintegrating on him as he is trying to pull out the old cabinets. We’re so lucky he was there when the disaster happened! (he says)
Those pictures are very unsettling! I’d almost rather not know. Like, fine, whatever, stop sending me scary pictures and just tell me when you’re done and the new floor and cabinets are in.
My poor old house. I keep thinking about the fact that my house is the same age as I am. How clogged and corroded have I become after more than half a century?
On a more practical note, our countertop quote came in at a ridiculous price, so we declined. Now we’re back to square one with trying to find countertop. The countertop we had chosen was just ok. It was fine. A nice, neutral, practical choice – we thought, until we got the actual quote. Then we were like, oh no, if it’s going to be that expensive then we need to find something we truly love-love-love. Alternatively we can find something that’s just ok and perfectly fine – for half the price!
Meanwhile, on a more positive note, we are enjoying the fully intact kitchen in our Seattle apartment. We made this for lunch yesterday — yum-yum! I’m so grateful for this place in Seattle. It’s a relief not to have to live in the Tucson house during the remodel, even though I miss our house!

Yesterday our contractor called to let us know that our water filter under our kitchen sink had sprung a leak and flooded the kitchen. This happened when he was about halfway through the kitchen demolition.
He sent photos:
The leak went undiscovered long enough and the water was deep enough that it saturated the bottom of some of our packed boxes of stuff, ruining our cookbooks and who knows what else.
However, according to our contractor, this had nothing to do with the fact that he was halfway through the kitchen demolition when the leak started. Our 2-year-old water filter just happened to suddenly spring a major leak at the same time as the kitchen demo was going on, quite coincidentally. And in fact, we were very lucky he arrived shortly after the leak started! And moreover we should never leave on a trip without shutting our water off at the main; quite negligent on our part.
I see no purpose in arguing the point. If there’s enough damage that we would need to involve insurance, (his or ours) then maybe we would need to try to determine culpability. But if not, arguing the matter isn’t going to do anything other than annoy everyone involved.
I wish I had a clear idea of what exactly has been ruined, beyond my cookbooks. But I don’t really want my contractor unpacking everything and strewing it all around, and I am not about to interrupt our Seattle vacation to fly back there and check on a few boxes of hopefully replaceable stuff. What’s done is done. We’ll find out later what survived the flood and what didn’t.
Meanwhile, he’s just about got the kitchen demo’d. It looks a fright, and I’m glad I’m not trying to live there right now.
In addition to recent water damage, there’s also evidence of older water damage.
We are opening up the drop ceiling to match the wood ceilings in the rest of the house, which means rerouting the electrical and replacing the 2×4’s with a beam.

Apparently our contractor found a lot of electrical no-no’s, like abandoned live wires.
This is the gas line for the stove.
The pipe in middle of the floor (which had been a wall), is a bit of a mystery. It’s either an abandoned water line or gas line. It will need capped and removed.
There were apparently once, quite awhile in the past, raccoons living in the dropped ceiling that we are removing. I’m not going to post the photo of the evidence of that because – eww. At least it was a long time ago.
It’s really disturbing to see photos of the house like this. Hopefully I can set it aside in my mind and continue to enjoy our Seattle vacation – which is already a third of the way through! It’s going by so fast.
I’ve been cheerfully posting about our various exploits in Tucson and Albuquerque, but the reality is, these last few weeks have been a bit of a struggle for me. Everything is fine, don’t worry. Everything is fine except my mood!
A few weeks ago we packed up and moved most of our personals and clothes back to Albuquerque to get out of the way of the remodel starting in Tucson. That was a lot of work and stressful. Once we got to Albuquerque I had to unpack everything and try to get organized. I didn’t have places to put everything because we didn’t bring all our furniture back. I brought back my clothes, but not the master bedroom furniture set to hold my clothes.
Then three days ago we drove back to Tucson again after having been in Albuquerque for about 10 days. I apologize to all my friends there who didn’t even know I was in Albuquerque. I’ve been too overwhelmed to keep up with everyone.
Now we are trying to finish packing up the house in Tucson. Everything that we didn’t already pack up and bring to Albuquerque, we are packing up to store in boxes in Tucson to get it out of the way of the remodel.
I don’t do well in the middle of house moves, remodels and similar transitions and upheavals. When my stuff is in a disarray, I’m discombobulated to the point of being nearly incapacitated. I need my structure, my routines, and my stuff that supports those routines.
So why do we keep doing this? Moving and remodeling, moving and remodeling. Do I forget how much I hate it? No, I remember, but I go ahead and do it anyway because I’m motivated by a sense of progress. And there’s nothing like a remodel for an in-your-face sense of progress!
I don’t know John’s motivation, but I’m guessing he’d rather create what he wants himself than pay twice as much for a house that isn’t to our taste. We tried to find a nice house at a higher price point that didn’t need remodeled – that was our original goal. But we couldn’t find anything we liked.
As we searched online and toured houses in 2020 we kept saying to each other, “This much for this? This isn’t worth that much! I don’t want to pay that much for this! Why is it so expensive?”
Many of the more expensive houses had been already remodeled, yes, but usually different sections of the houses were done at different times by different owners in different styles. Nothing flowed. Nothing felt like it maintained a consistent character.
That is not surprising, of course. It is expensive and invasive to remodel an entire house all at once. Most people just do a project at a time. A bit one year and a bit another year, rarely making it through the entire house before they move away. But after years of scattered, one-off projects, the houses often end up feeling disjointed. Or if the house had been recently flipped – remodeled all at once by an investor – invariably it was done in the currently popular color schemes (gray), in a muddled “transitional” style, using low-cost materials.
Nothing we saw felt like somewhere we would want to live. It wasn’t until we started looking at less expensive houses in the more modest (older but not old enough to be cool) neighborhoods that we started liking what we saw – except what we saw was – potential.
We both loved this house from the moment I spotted it on the internet.
It had been partially remodeled several times in the past, and was indeed a mishmash of styles with some serious issues (like nowhere in the kitchen for a refrigerator). Yet it still maintained enough of its original look and feel for us to picture what direction we could take it. More importantly, it was cheap enough that we would have the money to do it. There had been no upgrades done recently except air conditioning and a few other things we were happy with, so it was basically a blank slate. We struggle with the remodel process, but we’re going to love it when we’re done.
Meanwhile, as if life wasn’t complicated enough, we’re going to Seattle for a month! Seattle? Yep, nearly a year ago we reserved a small and surprisingly affordable guesthouse in Seattle for the entire month of August. It was a reaction to the tropical mosquitos that swarmed Tucson in August and September last year after unusually wet monsoon rains. Plus, ever since my cancer scare, we’ve been trying to do bucket-list fun stuff and not wait for retirement.
John grew up on the lakes of Minnesota, and I’ve always wanted him to experience the Puget Sound, where I raised my kids. Plus the northern Cascades have some of the best hiking in the country. And August is the only month in that region that isn’t rainy.
So far, the timing of our August reservations in Seattle seems to be working out perfectly for the remodel in Tucson. With luck, a lot of the most disruptive parts of the remodel will happen while we’re gone. Our floor tile is due to arrive soon, so we’re hoping our contractor can get the floor tiled in August. That is an invasive job and we will be happy to not be there for it!
Our kitchen cabinets are not expected to arrive for another 6 weeks, so that’s unfortunate. We’ll be back from Seattle by then, so after a quick stop in Tucson, we expect to spend September in Albuquerque, while the kitchen is being done.
Except I’ll need to go back to Tucson for my CT scan in the middle of September. I could get scanned in Albuquerque, but it’s important to me to stick with my current oncologist and radiologist. I will stay in a hotel for my scan if the house is too torn up. I’m always stressed when I’m getting scanned, so I’ll do whatever works to make it not too miserable.
There are actually some really beautiful resorts in Tucson that are nearly empty and quite affordable in September. No one visits Tucson in September! Summertime family travel is over by then, but escape-the-winter travel hasn’t started up yet. Tucson in September is still super hot, while the rest of the country is beautiful (well, I think Tucson is beautiful in September too, but I’m biased.)
Other than the trip out to Tucson for my CT scan, we plan to be in Albuquerque this fall until the remodel is done in Tucson. Well, not done-done. Just the most invasive stuff done. After the floors and kitchen are done we can reoccupy, and then we expect to be plugging away at a variety of smaller projects for quite some time.
So anyway, while I was in Albuquerque unpacking, I was also simultaneously packing for our trip to Seattle. It’s a multi-stage trip, with a stop in Tucson, then up to Boise to see Callan and Chirstina, and then on to Seattle, then back to Boise, then Tucson, and ending in Albuquerque (then back to Tucson, then back to Albuquerque, then back to Tucson…).
I sure wish I was one of those people who can pack a couple pair of pants, 3 tops, and a toothbrush, and be on my way. Noooo. Nope, not me. I have a bag that’s labeled “Tucson and Boise” and then two more larger bags labeled “Seattle”. Seattle is going to require a certain amount of gear because we’ll be camping, kayaking, and bicycling, as well as a variety of urban activities.
Plus there’s a bag for Biska with her toys and food dishes and leashes (and Benadryl in case she tries to eat another bee). And I have a bag labeled, “office” because this is only partially a vacation. We’re still trying to work part of it. I still have a few clients (over the phone). And we’ll be overseeing the remodel. John will have some meetings to attend by phone. We are hoping he won’t have to fly to Albuquerque mid-month, but it is possible.
Plus the rest of life goes on and we need to keep up with it all. I still have to keep track of the rentals; make sure the rent comes in and the landscaper gets paid, etc. Then there’s all the utility bills at both of our houses. And I have some online volunteer activities. It’s all fine, but it can get to be a lot to juggle when my life is in disarray, even in a good way. I am exhausted and depressed.
There is a little nagging worry in the back of my brain that wonders why I’m so exhausted. John is working harder than me, doing most of the packing while also working full-time. Yes, we’re doing some packing and life is a little chaotic right now, but is that really reason to be so completely exhausted? I can’t quite shove out of my brain a concern that my cancer might be back. I really want to live life to the fullest while I can. I try not to think about that too often, but part of me is aware – because it’s true – that one of these days a routine CT scan could suddenly cause my life to tilt out of wack again. I’m trying not to think too much about my upcoming cancer scan in September. But I know it’s coming up soon.
Hopefully our trip to Seattle will be relaxing and engrossing and exactly what we need, as the remodel progresses back in Tucson. A month seems like such a long time to be gone, but it will be good to be in one spot for an entire 4 weeks in a row – something we haven’t done in awhile. When your vacation encompasses a longer period of stability than your regular life, you gotta wonder.
The other day a friend of mine in one of my zoom meetings asked me where I was, and I said, “Uh,” and I looked up and turned to look at the window before answering, “Tucson.” Because – for a second there, I couldn’t remember.
In addition to choosing materials, we are also redesigning our kitchen. It was originally a small, narrow, galley kitchen, and we’re going to remove the center wall and create an expanded kitchen and breakfast nook in what was the kitchen and dining room. Then we’ll use the Arizona room, which was being used as a family room, as the new dining room.
We started with my own birds-eye sketch, which we took to the cabinet designers. Many cabinet retailers have in-house kitchen design staff.
It took several iterations to get it right.
We started at ProSource. Their designer had cool software; here’s an early mock-up.
But the designer there wasn’t very helpful with design questions and was kind of an ass. Plus we didn’t like their cabinets, which were very expensive.
Then we went to a cabinet representative in Albuquerque we had used for the Placitas house, but his cabinets were also too expensive. Twice as expensive now as they were when we did the house in Placitas in 2017-2018.
We also tried Lowes – still too expensive, at least for the cabinet lines we wanted. We aren’t going to buy any sort of particle board, such as MDF, which stands for medium-density fiberboard. That will expand and warp if it gets damp – a very poor choice for kitchens and bathrooms. We are determined to find affordable, cabinet-grade plywood.
We finally think we’ve found our cabinets at a place called Window Depot. Not an inspiring name, but our contractor recommended a particular designer there, and we do like her. We also like the looks of one of the cabinet lines that they carry. It’s a small company called Gila based in Phoenix, and they only make a few color options. Luckily, we like one of the colors. They come as close to affordable quality as it’s possible to get right now. And they generally ship in 4-6 weeks, unlike some lines that are still taking months and months.
There’s still a couple minor adjustments to be made to the layout, but we’re getting close.
Her software isn’t as cool as the first guy’s, but we can see what we need to see.
It’s been stressful for John and I. A lot of work and expense.
But luckily, Biska is a very secure dog, and hasn’t been at all upset by the construction so far. “Oh yeah, I forgot you moved my doggie door to the bedroom, woof, woof!”
As I looked through my photos from June and July, looking for things to post, I mostly found pictures like this:
Dozens and dozens of them. Don’t worry, I’ll only post a tiny fraction, just to give you an idea.
John and I are determined to make sure that we choose materials that we both like. Remodels are so expensive – we want to do it right. It’s much more complicated than choosing a few random things that we like – everything needs to coordinate well or the end result is chaotic.
Also the materials should coordinate with the stye of the house and its occupants. For example, if we went with a lot of bling – glass and other bright and shiny options, it wouldn’t settle well with our burnt adobe brick house and southwest style furnishings. Nor would a modern, severe, or industrial feel work with the muted, natural colors and textures in our home.
Our goal is a home that feels like it belongs in the desert, without ending up as a southwest cliché. We’ve put hours, days…weeks into this. We’re so tired of looking at materials!

The story of my life. We’re packing. Again. Again!
No, we didn’t buy a new house, lol. We’re just getting stuff packed up and out the way for the big remodel. And while we’re at it, we’re dragging a bunch of stuff back to Albuquerque, in anticipation of me spending more time there for awhile.
They say, “Home is where the heart is.” For me it’s more like, “Home is where my clothes are.”
When we first bought our house in Tucson, in 2020, I split my clothes in half, with half in Albuquerque and half in Tucson. I also tried that same tactic a few years ago when I was splitting my time between Santa Fe and Placitas, but it didn’t work back then either. In the end, I brought everything to Santa Fe.
Same thing this time around – over the last couple of years I kept bringing more and more stuff out until I had brought all my clothes to Tucson. Apparently I like having all my clothes in one place. Now I am moving all my clothes back to Albuquerque. I’m not sure for not sure how long. Eventually we plan to end up in Tucson full time, but John’s pesky job keeps getting in the way. So it’s Albuquerque for now.
I can’t really say that we are moving back to Albuquerque, because our permanent residence, and drivers licenses, and car registrations and taxes have been in Albuquerque all this time.
I’m sad to be shifting away from Tucson for now. But we’ll be back. We do like Tucson better than Albuquerque, even though Albuquerque has a special place in our hearts.
As we’ve anticipated all along, it’s becoming harder for John to work remotely. We always figured that once the pandemic was over, he would have to show back up in Albuquerque for work. Of course the pandemic isn’t over, but everyone is acting like it is. Maybe because it’s less deadly now? Covid numbers are very high and presumably significantly underreported since so many of us are just testing at home and riding it out. But let me not get distracted. My point is, John’s numerous meetings are now being held in-person, in Albuquerque.
Simultaneously, we have finally gotten our remodel in Tucson underway. I think we’ve found a guy who is trustworthy and can implement the remodel without us being there. That’s definitely my preference. I dislike chaos, and I need a quiet environment for my coaching sessions. The remodel we have planned is a very disruptive one. We’re going to strip the kitchen down to the studs, remove a center wall, and completely redo the layout with all new everything. We’re also going to tile the entire house. New flooring is hugely disruptive because everything has to be moved out of the way.
I don’t want to try to be living there while that’s happening. Ideally, I would be living a block away, like when we remodeled the house in Placitas. I could literally stand in our backyard at our rented house on La Paz and look up at our house on the top of the hill and see that the contractor wasn’t up there (even though he was claiming to be there all the time). We had a terrible contractor in Placitas.
Being a 7-hour drive away will not be convenient. I really hope we don’t regret this. We could rent a nearby house in Tucson, but that would be expensive. And it doesn’t get around the fact that John needs to be in Albuquerque – and I would like to be there with him!
The room between our kitchen and our garage is going to be our new dining room.
It was originally an Arizona room before a previous owner converted it into a family room. An Arizona room is basically a covered and screened back patio, except they are often located between the house and the garage, with a window or open decorative cement blocks built into the wall along the street side, allowing for a cross breeze. According to Wikipedia, “…residents slept in their Arizona room during the summer months, before the advent of air conditioning…Arizona rooms are often decorated with Southwestern decor and furniture, and reflect the casual, informal style characteristic of the Southwest.“
I really can’t imagine trying to sleep in the middle of the summer in Arizona without air conditioning. And I love the heat! It would have been hard. Some nights it doesn’t get below 80º.
Even though we can now peacefully sleep in our air conditioned bedroom, I still really like the concept of an Arizona room. It’s nice to be outside, yet protected from the aggressive little tropical mosquitos that swarm during August and September. I’m looking forward to getting our back patio screened later this summer. But it won’t be a true Arizona room because it won’t have the cross breeze.
Our original Arizona room was converted to a family room by a previous owner many years ago. It has the most character of any of the rooms in the house, because when the previous owners made the conversion, the left the burnt adobe brick exposed. It’s going to make an excellent dining room.
But because it had once been an exterior space next to the garage, the floor had originally been built at the same height of the garage floor, which is 2.5″ lower than the rest of the house. When the previous owners enclosed the room, they added a thin cement overlay to the original brick floor, but they did not add the volume of cement it would have taken to level the floor with the rest of the house. Therefore, we have a 2.5″ ledge running across the middle of our kitchen-dining area.
Talk about a trip hazard!
I’m going to lose track of how many floors John and I have leveled. We’ve owned at least three prior houses that had sunken living rooms. The sunken living rooms were frequently built in the 1970’s – 90’s when the “open concept” was popular and the architects were trying to create a sense of room definition while using fewer walls. We dislike them, considering them dated and a trip hazard. At our first house in Albuquerque, guests would regularly fall off the edge of the landing near the front door, right into the sunken living room as we all stood around greeting each other or saying our good-byes. It was not a good design!
Since then, whenever we plan to upgrade the flooring, we level the floor first, before going to the effort and expense of installing new flooring. So our first step in this remodel is to level the floor!
A few days before the cement pour, our contractor came out to prep the space. This picture is confusing. A hole in the wall in the shape of a top hat? Are we getting creative, or what?
We’re going to install a new 8′ wide sliding glass door instead of the original 6′ wide door, but the new door hasn’t arrived yet, due to delivery delays. Cement is also really hard to get, so when our contractor got a call that there was going to be cement available on a certain day, he jumped right on it. We couldn’t lay cement up against a wall that’s going away, but we wanted to use the 6′ door until the 8′ door arrives.
Here’s the old 6′ wide door reinstalled after the cement pour. We jerry-rigged the old door back in place temporarily. We are (a month later) still waiting for the new, wider door. Once it comes in, our contractor will cut the rest of the drywall to the new, wider size. This isn’t pretty but it works for now.
Here the room is prepped before the cement arrived. There’s a form across the doorway to the garage, the baseboards are removed, and rebar is installed. Note the lovely lilac paint that was hiding under the baseboards, lol. Not a good match for the brick! What were they thinking? And we thought the previous owner’s blue walls were bad.
Our contractor installed wood forms, including a step out to the back patio. If you look very closely in the bottom left corner of the next picture, you can see some of the original patio brick. It’s under the wall that was installed when the room was enclosed and the first cement floor was added. That’s when they should have raised the floor height.
Cement is messy, so everything was taped off.
In the original layout, the door on the left would have been the back door out of the small, galley kitchen, and the door on the right would have been a sliding glass door off the dining room, both doors leading into what was the Arizona room.
This room started as an Arizona room, was converted to a family room, and now we’re going to make it into a dining room. We’re going to use the previous dining room as space to expand the kitchen, and for a breakfast nook. More on that later.
They’re planning to bring the cement in through the garage.
The cement crew is here, but no cement. The cement truck is late and we’re a bit worried. Our contractor steps outside to make some calls. We’re prepped and ready to go. Cement is so hard to get right now that it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if this delivery fell through. And it could be another month before another delivery is available.
Huge relief – the cement is here!
And we’re pumping! Yep, it’s splashing everywhere.
They work quickly to level it as it’s pumping in.
It’s loud and spasmodic.
Ugha-ugha-ugha-ugha-ugha
We couldn’t walk on it – or reinstall the doors – until it cured.
Our cement contractor told a story about a pour he did out in the rural area to the east of Tucson in a basement, and the doors were left off all night while the cement cured. In the morning there were clear paw prints of a mountain lion and her cubs, including an indent where they had laid down on the cool surface. The contractor offered to resurface it, but the homeowner loved the prints and left it that way.
We leaned our doors up for the night the best we could. With my luck I’d get something significantly less desirable than lion prints. I was just praying for no stuck cockroaches.
When the cement started to cure, these footprints slowly appeared out of nowhere. They were like ghost prints because there was no detectable indent or texture disturbance, just a color difference caused by the slower rate of curing, presumably due to greater density where the cement was compacted by the weight of the person.
As the cement continued to cure, the footprints faded.
They are only barely discernible now.
That crack’s not an issue, by the way. The new cement has multiple fine cracks, which is to be expected. They will covered by tile. The cracks are not structural and will not impact the tile.
We had put the furniture into the garage, and then John went to Albuquerque and I wasn’t able to get it back out of the garage by myself. So I dismantled my backyard hammock and set it up inside. The hammock I could move by myself!
With a hammock in there it’s looking more like an Arizona room and less like a dining room – almost as if we’re going the wrong direction! But projects often look worse before they look better.
Meanwhile it’s hilarious to watch John and I trip over nothing as we cross the room, automatically compensating out of habit for a step-up or step-down that is no longer there.
