Post-remodel?!? No, we’re not actually done with the remodel. It’s more like we’ve created a workable pausing point to accommodate our late-winter and spring visitors. We were not ready for the kids to come for the holidays, which was a disappointment for me. But I was determined to be ready for our annual spring visitors. Because that’s part of the responsibilities that come with being the “someone you know who lives in Tucson”, right?
After I got back from visiting with Laura in the San Luis Obispo area, my next order of business was get my house ready for our first visitor in a long time. My good friend, Tracey, was coming from California.
For the most part, the remodel was in a good pausing point. The hall bathroom was done except for towel racks and a toilet paper.
But the family room and screened patio were full of junk.
And so was the office.
And I hadn’t managed to get all the Christmas decorations down before my trip to California, lol.
But more alarming was the state of the guest room.
So I ran around and somehow managed to find spots for all the boxes except the art boxes. I left the art boxes out because Tracey generously offered to help me hang art.
I even got the office clean, which wasn’t strictly necessary. And it was very temporary. It looks good in the picture below, but it is back to being a disaster as I write this. After Tracey left I started trying to do more unpacking and organizing, and the office once again looks like a hurricane hit. In fact, it is currently worse than it has ever been. But I’m tired of taking pictures of disasters, so we’re going to continue to imagine it’s all nice and tidy.
I had a great time with Tracey. Mostly we went for short hikes and long walks, and ate lunch outside on café patios. These are two of my most favorite things to do.
After numerous delays, we were supposed to finally get our countertop installed between Christmas and New Years, which would have worked great. John wanted to be there for the installation, and we spent that entire week in Tucson.
But of course they were delayed. Again. They rescheduled for early January. Only a weeks delay, but it required John to make a special trip out to Tucson from Albuquerque, and turn around and go back out to Albuquerque right after the installation. But it’s finally in. Thank goodness! We bought those countertop slabs back in August!
This is the hall bath.
The countertop matches the cabinets very well. But I’m concerned that the countertop/cabinet combo in the bathroom doesn’t match the white and blue tiles we chose. I’m not quite sure it all ties together. But John really liked those wall tiles. As we all know, John has trouble finding tiles he likes. And I wasn’t about to hunt all through town trying to match a sample tile that I PAINTED MYSELF, like I did for our floors.
So it’s just going to have to be good enough. I don’t think it clashes. It’s just that the dark blue accent tiles seem a bit random. It would have been better if they had pulled more directly from the colors in the quartzite countertop. I can try to tie in the blue accent tiles with my choices in soap dishes, towels, wall art, and other accessories. It’ll be ok. The tile is really cool. You can see how textured it is where the light shines on it in the top left corner of this picture.
I guess if we end up really bothered by the lack of coherence with the dark blue accent tiles, we can pull them out and redo those sections. It wouldn’t be very hard to pop those tiles out and just use the white ones. What would be difficult is finding a different tile to match the white ones because they are unusual. The blue tiles have the same smooth, raised pattern as the white ones, and that’s hard to find.
Here they’re bringing in a large cut slab on a special cart that can carry it on its edge and then raise it up flat.
This slab of quartzite weighs about 300 pounds and is brittle.
John was glad he was able to be there to watch it all. I was nervous and grumpy, afraid something would go wrong, but he was excited to have it finally being installed.
This next picture is of the double sinks in the master bathroom. We will eventually completely redo this bathroom too, but not yet. Probably not until this summer sometime. We have several sets of guests coming this spring, and don’t want to be in the middle of big projects during those visits. We need to save up our dollars anyway, so we’re going to take a break for a bit. We’re just going to install the faucets and call it good enough for now.
Later we will do the rest of the master bathroom, new solid wood doors for the bedrooms and bathrooms, tile the floor of the screened in porch, a gas insert and Mexican tile hearth for the fireplace, exterior stucco on the back of the house (just over the wood addition, not over the burnt adobe brick), some roof work including a foam roof and solar panels, some additional exterior garden walls, a garden shed, and other landscaping such as paths, lighting, and pergolas – also with solar panels. And lots more plants. So lots to do yet. That’ll be stage two.
Meanwhile, we’re pleased with how well the countertop matches the cabinets, and the kitchen will look even better once the backsplash is in. I’m not worried about the kitchen tying together – it will all coordinate well. We’re using thin-cut adobe brick for the backsplash. The brick will tie in well with the rust colored veins in the quartzite, as well as the terracotta floor tiles.

I find it helps to show a few photos to those helping us when we’re shopping for materials, or else they assume we want what’s in style right now.

That is admittedly a nice photo. What’s in style is pretty and it works in many different types of architecture, but it’s so different from what we’re trying to do! You can see our challenge, when 95% of the materials available are to create spaces like in the photo above. And although it’s nice, it’s just not our goal. We’re trying to bring out the character in our particular house, and of the southwest desert in general.
Thank goodness I made the judgment call to tell the kids we might not be ready for houseguests at Christmas. Because, nope. Here’s the state of the hall bathroom on December 22.
The new medicine cabinet is in, although they broke a light fixture putting it in. There’s no sink or countertop. The toilet is hooked up, although they’re going to have to unhook it again to tile behind it.
Here’s the new tub. We’re making progress.
Don’t worry, that scary turquoise color is not my attempt at southwest style. It’s just tile backing and won’t show when it’s done. And, lol, no, my tub isn’t a southwest style terracotta color, that’s just the paper they taped to the outside of the tub to protect it during the tile install. The bathtub is white. And it’s a nice big one. The funny brown U-shapes on the wall are plastic spacers they use to make sure the tile is lined up exactly right before they put the grout in.
The bathroom looks terrible right now, but it will be nice when it’s finished. But yeah, it’s not done yet.
Meanwhile, John says that the reason we had an ungodly large spider in our living room wasn’t because I haven’t had pest control out recently. It’s because of all the holes in the walls. So I did an inventory of holes in my walls.
You probably don’t really care to see pictures of all the holes in my walls, but I’m posting them here so my friend, Tracey, can do a careful check when she arrives, to make sure they are all plugged up. Because yes, my first, brave, overnight visitor is due to arrive from California during the second half of January, and I plan to be ready. With no spiders!

Yeah, don’t even ask. We did not put that outlet hidden in the recesses of the wall ourselves. That gem came with the house. I don’t know how or why it’s there, but it’s surely not to code.
In case you’re curious, this next one is the guts of the bathtub, as seen from the hall closet. Doesn’t it sort of look like the tub is just sitting on a few stacked bricks? Huh. Is that ok? (La-la-la-la; nothing to see here, moving on…)
I now have a light in my closet and can tell my dark greens from my dark blues and my blacks. Not that anyone cares about clothes anymore, post-pandemic. But I like to be able to see my clothes.
This next large hole is in the master bathroom. We’re not remodeling the master bathroom yet, but they went ahead and did a little plumbing work while the plumber was onsite fixing other corrosion issues (we have lots of corrosion issues). And they had to open up the wall to do so.
I believe my contractor and my husband are both assuming we can just leave it that way until we’re ready to remodel this bathroom at a later date. Um, guys, we might not remodel this bathroom until this summer. Meanwhile, this gaping hole is like a foot from me while I’m in a very vulnerable position. Maybe we can temporarily block it off well enough to keep the spiders from biting my butt.
This next hole is in the ceiling where the range hood used to vent.
It currently has a piece of painted cardboard over it. Thanks John, but…I know that hole is still there!
I could just buy a range hood and get it installed already, but I’m completely stuck regarding range hoods. The type for kitchen islands and peninsulas are insanely expensive and I’ve never seen one I like.

The current style includes an elegant piece of curved glass at the bottom. And I’m thinking – glass and grease. Great. (Another random picture from the internet)
They also make a style that recesses into your ceiling, but our ceiling is 5 inch thick wood topped by some tarpaper – with no gap, which limits what we can put up there. Plus, the guys didn’t think we should cut an enormous hole in the wood ceiling in order to put the range fan up there. But I don’t want it hanging in my face either.
I do like the fan that’s part of my built-in microwave on the wall to the right of the stove. It’s perfect – I can’t even see it. But the concern is that it’s too far away from the stove to be effective.
I’m tempted to skip the range hood all together, but I have a gas stove and I probably really should have a better vent.
I don’t even remember where these two holes are and I just took these photos this morning. I’m thinking that’s the hall bath ceiling.
These holes are small but they’re in the guest room, so I want to get them filled.
We also got our front door fixed, so it actually opens more than about a foot. I have no idea why they didn’t quite finish out the tile under the front door back when they were tiling MONTHS AGO, but my threshold has been sitting around uninstalled for months, and the door wasn’t working right. Apparently they were waiting – since September – to install it on the COLDEST DAY OF THE YEAR.
It took, for some unknown reason, at least two or three hours – the door hanging open the whole time – to get that little project finished up.
The front door works now. One more step in the right direction.
I guess the weirdest thing about living in the middle of a remodel is having guys coming and going with no notice. I’ll get up in the morning, wander out to get my coffee, and they’ll be electricians out there. Then I have to take my coffee fixings to the bedroom, where hopefully there’s working electricity.
I quickly learned to drag clothes on the minute I stepped out of bed. That way I’m not chasing Biska down the hallway in my robe. Biska LOVES the guys, and they love her too, so keeping her corralled and out of their way keeps me hopping.
One day earlier this week the noise was suddenly so ridiculously loud that I ran around the house like a crazy woman trying to get ready to go somewhere, anywhere. I grabbed my shoes, my dog, her leash, and some water, and ended up on a 2 hour walk. I wasn’t getting my work done, but at least it was good exercise.
Yesterday afternoon I was working in my office when I noticed my house was unusually quiet. I got up and looked out front – no trucks. They had all left. I had my house to myself! I put on a little Christmas music and went back to work. Next thing I know, someone opens my front door, tromps down the hall, loudly uses the hall bathroom (the one they are remodeling – I guess that’s why they bothered to hook up the toilet even though they will have to unhook it again to do the wall tile – so they can use it). Then the guy tromps back down the hall and back out the front door. The house was quiet again. I don’t even know who it was!
Don’t worry, if you are scheduled to visit me, we will pause the remodel, so there won’t be random guys coming in unannounced to use the facilities. It’s not like a few days off is going to slow our progress down appreciably!
Speaking of my remodel being slowed down (repeatedly), have I mentioned the French doors have gone missing? We ordered them in November. It was only supposed to take one week for them to arrive, but now I can’t even get a status update.
I guess we’ll go a bit longer without French doors. It doesn’t matter too much. But if I had doors, I’d be working in the living room instead of in my bedroom, which is adjacent to the banging in the hall bathroom.

Looks like I forgot to post this from a week or two ago. Here’s a Tucson remodel update, and I’ll have another one for you soon.
Did I tell you about when I first got back to Tucson and wasn’t yet accustomed to living in the middle of a remodel with guys coming randomly and suddenly at 7 AM? One day my contractor texted me at 6:53 AM wanting to come over at 7:00.
At the time I was thinking, WTF, seriously? I get 5 minutes warning? Turns out he meant 7:30. And nowadays I’m used to that sort of thing anyway. I’m like, fine, come on over whenever. Whatever. Let’s just get this work done.
Now I have a system for dealing with contractors arriving at the house at 7 AM, given that I’m not a 7 AM person. They have a code to get into the house, and I’m like, come on in and do your thing. I’ll be hiding in the master bedroom, pretend I’m not home. If you need anything, I’ll be available after 8:00.
At 6:55 I pull clothes on for “just in case” and then I go back to bed (lol). I don’t actually go back to sleep, but I want my coffee time and I’m not ready to talk to anyone that early. I have it all set up to make my coffee in my room so I don’t have to walk out into the kitchen and deal with the guys out there. I’ve got a teapot, and cups and my french press. Works great.
It’s also useful that our master bedroom has a sliding glass door to the backyard, so I can let Biska outside without having to interact with the contractors. I’ve also moved a small table into the master bedroom, so I have everything I need to work while in hiding. So I have no excuse for not doing my Christmas cards (yep, haven’t even started on them).
I usually like my house really warm, because I’m very cold blooded and a lot of the time I’m sitting at my desk. But I don’t want my contractors overheating while they work, because that’s not good for productivity or moral. So I’ve been keeping the house cold and running electric space heaters in my room by my desk.
It all works fine! But I’m dreading when it comes time to remodel the master bathroom. I will lose my sanctuary! I’m seriously considering delaying the master bathroom remodel until August, when we will (hopefully) be in Seattle again. The master bathroom is going to be a big job. We’ll be removing a wall and switching the location of the toilet and shower.

We’re also putting more lights in the family room. Originally it had two ugly, old dim lights. Now we’ve got holes for 6 new bright lights.
I’m always reluctant to put holes in wood, but I like a lot of light because I don’t see well otherwise. My contractor, Neil, is a believer in lots of light too, so the two of us collude and we end up with too much light! We’ll put them on dimmers.
We’re making better progress now that I’m out here, even though it’s awkward living in the middle of a remodel.
I’ll write more about mine soon too. But hers is much bigger and scarier.
Last weekend she wrote, “We’ve been back in our house a week and had still been eating off of our living room floor for the past week because I’ve been so busy, either working or home with the kids because our nanny has been sick. But proud of what I pulled together in our dining room today!”
I believe these next two photos are her kitchen. She says, “I figure I’m going to be without a kitchen forever. The biggest issue is our only small sink is in the bathroom on the second floor, so quite inconvenient.” Inconvenient, I guess! More like, impossible.
She says, “The space on the back wall to the left is for the fridge.” What space on what back wall? I barely know what I’m looking at – I’m just like, yup, house guts. Everywhere.
Then she says, “Of course our mini fridge decided to die two nights ago, so all of our food has been out in the front porch, luckily it’s been mostly cold enough outside.”
She attempts to stay positive, saying, “I got a new fridge delivered today! Just have to wait for Bryan to get back so we can get it put in.” I’m glad she didn’t have to wait 6 months for a refrigerator.
Then she goes on to say, “Unfortunately the work in a house has slowed to a snail’s base. And our contractor is out for the next 2 weeks so nothing will be done until January.” Yikes. My contractors are slow but steady. I’ve got work happening up through December 23 and then starting back up again December 26.
And finally she comments, “And I’m noticing some stuff that’s been broken since they started working here but I assume everything will get fixed up before it’s all over.” Well it should, yes, but make a list!
And yep, I hear ya. I’ve got damaged possessions, damaged parts of the house that weren’t part of the remodel, and even a few small chips on my brand new floor tile.
I can’t imagine trying to do such a big remodel with both of them with full-time jobs, plus three little kids. But I can’t wait to go visit when it’s all done!
Somewhere back in there is a red couch. I mean seriously, how does one lose a bright red, full-sized, hide-a-bed couch?
Ah-ha! There it is!
Oh no, it won’t go through the door!
We got it in there – surely it will come out again. We will probably have to take the door off its hinges and we might need to take the hide-a-bed part out of the couch to make it easier to move. Sigh. It’s all so much work!
Meanwhile John and I both have had a little bit of a cold, nothing serious. We must have gotten it when we were still in Albuquerque. I had a migraine on the day we packed up to get ready to go to Tucson, and a migraine the next day when we drove out. That was tough because we drove both the van and the Mini Cooper out, meaning we both had to drive the whole way without being able to switch off drivers. Then I still had the migraine on the first day here, in midst of the complete chaos. I didn’t realize I was getting a cold, I thought I was just migraining due to stress, but now we’re both a little sniffly.
In order to prepare for the remodel, we had packed everything in Tucson into boxes. So now we’re living out of boxes and it’s general chaos. When they were tiling the floor, I think that every time they got ready to tile a room they moved the furniture into the next room over. It was all piled up together in the wrong rooms.
We finally mostly got the piles of furniture out of the living room.
But we still have boxes everywhere.
It feels like we just moved in, but on top of that, everything is filthy and only half of everything works.
For example, in the kitchen we have literally half the sink (one side). The other side is not hooked up to a drain. The contractor had a piece of cardboard over the non-working side so we wouldn’t try to run water down a non-existent drain. The cardboard was all warped and splashed and gross from the contractor using the sink for contractor related tasks, so John taped a piece of tile over the useless half of the sink instead of the cardboard.
It happens to be an unneeded sample of travertine tile. We did not end up using travertine. We have lots and lots of sample materials that we did not end up choosing. It’s better to pay $2 or $4 for samples of things and take them home and rule them out, then buy thousands of dollars worth of a material that you’re going to regret after it’s installed.
At least we have half a working sink, but unfortunately we only have cold water in the kitchen. That’s because our contractor assumed we were not keeping our old kitchen faucet, and threw it out into the backyard with the old sink when he demolished the kitchen, and it got messed up. Except it wasn’t an old kitchen faucet, it was new a year ago; John had installed it sometime after we moved in because the original one was really bad. Well, now the newish one doesn’t work right.
Meanwhile, since our countertop has taken so long to arrive, we’ve reinstalled the old sink and newish faucet that had been tossed into the weeds in the backyard, so we have something to use while we wait for the countertop. We were planning on replacing the sink but not the faucet, but now that the faucet is mostly broken we need to replace both the sink and the faucet. It was a $300 faucet, new last year, but oh well. When remodeling, you can’t sweat the small stuff. Typically I don’t consider $300 to be a small amount, but during a remodel thousands of dollars are flying out the window and it puts things into perspective.

At least we have a working microwave and refrigerator. The kitchen is minimally functional but less than ideal. It’s a lot better than it was, and it’s going to look nice eventually.
The hall bathroom has no sink or toilet. There’s a red plastic picnic bowl blocking the sewer gas from escaping the pipe where the toilet belongs. I’m not actually sure why the toilet can’t be installed. It was removed for the floor tiling, which is done in that room. It looks like our contractor has been doing drywall work behind it, and we might end up putting wall tile back there too.
Luckily, the master bathroom is mostly working. We have not remodeled the master bathroom yet except for the floor tile. It has a working toilet, working shower, and one of the two sinks is working. So the master bathroom is essentially functional.
We also have the pool bathroom in working condition. That one is built off the back of the garage and has no heat or air conditioning. I bought a portable heat and AC unit for it that John is going to install at some point. But for now, it’s cold out there! I know, I know, it’s Tucson. How cold can it be? I was 52º when I was ready to shower at 9:00 this morning, which is far warmer than Albuquerque at 29º. But still, I find 52º to be rather cold for a bathroom.
The construction dust has permeated the entire house and is nearly overwhelming. It’s like a volcanic ash fall, over everything. I suspect the tile guy may have been cutting floor tile in the house. It’s the sort of dust that gets into crevasses and is never coming out. It’s not just on the top of all the furniture and surfaces. It’s on the sides and even the undersides of everything. It’s coated the walls, permeated the rolled-up area rugs, infused the lamp shades, crept into drawers, it’s everywhere and we will never be rid of it all. Actually, maybe we don’t have the sniffles after all, maybe it’s the dust!
Our contractor was able to get the cabinets installed this past week. Remember how the cabinet company ended up sending the wrong corner cabinets twice? Turns out they sent the wrong corner cabinets THREE TIMES. The first two mistakes were factory mistakes and the third mistake was the local cabinet designer. She has generally been very good and easy to work with, and she did expedite the replacement. Finally, on the fourth try, we got the correct corner cabinets.
Now we are trying to get onto the countertop installer’s schedule. He is based in Phoenix and needs to come down twice, first to create his template and then to install the countertop after he has fabricated it. We are hoping he can come down to do the templating before Thanksgiving, but we’ll have to see. Even so, it will probably be at least a month before we have countertop, and it may not be until after Christmas.
We had wanted to go to a big art show in Tucson this weekend, but we are tired and possibly getting over a mild cold (or dust allergies) and are still very much not unpacked. The critical items are unpacked. We have the basic necessities like coffee, toilet paper, blankets, aspirin, and dog food! But still, every time I turn around I can’t find something I need.
Our house looks like a crazy person went through unhooking toilets and sinks and electrical outlets and strewing them around, and then a moving van unloaded boxes and furniture completely haphazardly, immediately followed by a volcano spewing ash.
John has been busy fixing and installing things. For example, the sewer gas I mentioned that we had coming from the hall bathroom. That’s what happens when sinks and toilets aren’t installed. So he plugged that up. Also the kitchen cabinets were installed but the shelves weren’t yet, so he spent a lot of time yesterday installing cabinet shelves so I could start to unpack the kitchen.
Generally it’s easier to remodel before moving in, but we bought this house in the summer of 2020 and it was just not feasible to try to do a remodel during the second half of 2020. I went for several months without even being able to buy a dryer – there’s no way we could have gotten tile and cabinets and countertop in. And I was immunocompromised due to chemotherapy, so we didn’t want any workers in the house. And I wouldn’t have wanted to go to any stores to pick out materials. For awhile there I didn’t go anywhere, at all, except the cancer center.
I’m grateful we’re able to do the remodel now, and I am sure looking forward to being done. It’s going to be awhile yet before we’re all the way done, but it’s getting better and I know it’s going to be beautiful.
Yesterday we did FaceTime with Callan and Chirstina to show them the house. Originally they were going to come visit for Thanksgiving until I realized we probably weren’t going to be ready for guests yet. So they were curious to know how far we actually did manage to get. Well, the house is livable but certainly not comfortable. After our FaceTime chat they realized I was not kidding when I said they really don’t want to visit yet!
The guest room was the one room that was completely empty. So far we’ve managed to get the bed dragged into there, but not set up.
Also I had put some clothes in there and managed to break the closet rod, so there lay my clothes in a rumpled heap on the ground. At least they were bagged because – dust!!
John went to the store this morning and bought me a croissant and flowers. Who knows where we might have vases, so he put the flowers in a plastic water jug. He usually makes pancakes on the weekend, but this weekend toaster waffles are going to have to suffice.
Meanwhile Biska is as cheerful as ever. She’s like, “Everything looks fine to me.”
We haven’t been back to Tucson since a short trip to check on the remodel October 20-23. Now it’s almost a month later and not much progress has been made. As you may remember, the cabinet factory sent the wrong sized corner cabinets for the kitchen twice – not once, but twice – so that has seriously slowed down the progress in the kitchen.
Meanwhile, I don’t know why our contractor hasn’t been able to do other things that seem to me like he could be doing. For example, I kept thinking he would install the hall bathroom tub, which I bought a long time ago. But then it occurred to me that he’s probably assuming we’re planning to replace the old faucets, and new faucets have not appeared (because I hadn’t thought to order them), therefore, the tub installation hasn’t made it onto his radar yet. That’s the kind of inefficiency I hope to improve with increased communication, which should come with me being out there instead of distracted by other things in Albuquerque.
Now I realize I need to buy faucets, but I don’t know anything about faucets. First I need to research faucets. Yes, I’ve been using faucets my whole life, but I’ve never paid any attention to them other than wondering which way is hot. I don’t want to buy badly-designed faucets out of ignorance, so it’s time I learn something about faucets.
For example, the first thing I saw on the Home Depot website that looked right, said in fine print, “Shower system trim kit only, purchase shower valve separately”. Hmmm, I don’t know what that means. And it’s not a good idea to buy something when the fine print is going over your head!
Our contractor is probably also waiting for us to pick out tile to go around the tub. We did find tile we like, but I haven’t actually bought it yet because I don’t know how much to buy, because I’m not sure how much of the bathroom wall is getting tiled. I just need to go out there, and stand in the bathroom with John and our contractor and talk it through. (This is the waving-arms-and-pointing-as-we-go planning style I was mentioning in my post about Emily’s remodel. Unlike me, she has an actual designer.)
We’ve decided to go out to Tucson at the end of this week with the intention of me staying out there to pay more attention to the project. Our contractor is a really nice guy, understands our taste, does quality work, pays attention to details, and responds well to prompts. Unfortunately he’s not as organized and proactive as he would need to be for me to be able to just sit out in Albuquerque twiddling my thumbs (and posting exercise videos, lol).
That’s why I’m packing up all the stuff I had temporarily moved to Albuquerque in September, and moving back to Tucson. It’s going to be rough living in the midst of a construction zone. But hopefully my planning and organizational skills will help manage this project more efficiently.
Meanwhile here’s some pictures that our contractor sent yesterday. He had just finished putting the knobs and handles I ordered on the cabinets. Some of the cabinets are installed, and some can’t be installed until we get the missing corner cabinets.

This little bit of brick wall above the window was never plastered over because it was hidden under a soffit. So we decided to leave it exposed. The rest of the brick wall was plastered over, and it would be prohibitively difficult to remove the plaster.
We’ll need to choose backsplash that complements the brick. But we’re not going to look for kitchen backsplash until we have a piece of countertop to take to the stores with us. And the countertop can’t be cut until the cabinets are in. Our countertop is still sitting in the slab yard in Phoenix.
In this next picture our contractor is showing us the countertop lighting under the cabinets.
I don’t see well without a lot of light, so we are paying close attention to lighting. For example, recently we were watching TV and there was gray lettering on top of a dark background, and I literally didn’t even know the words were there. John was like, “You can’t read that?” And I was like, “Read what?” Because of this, I’m starting to avoid driving at night. I’ll see a doctor about it again soon, but I’m guessing it has to do with the fact that they’ve been telling me for awhile that eventually I’ll need cataract surgery.
This next picture is where the peninsula with the stove will go, but it is also waiting for the correct corner base cabinets. I won’t have a stove when I move back in later this week, but at least there is a microwave. My contractor is going to make a temporary plywood countertop so he can install the sink before we arrive.
John’s going with me back to Tucson and can stay through the week of Thanksgiving before needing to return to Albuquerque. I’m glad he will be there to help me get situated. He will also be able to come back and spend more than a week in Tucson at Christmas.
In case you’re bored with the slow, dragging pace of my remodel, here’s a remodel we can all watch in awe.
Emily started after I did, but she is passing me up and heading toward a strong finish in her Boston remodel marathon before I’m even halfway through my leisurely stroll in the southwest desert.
Emily started with an actual architect, who drew up real honest-to-goodness architectural plans. (John and I just talk and point and sketch and change things up until the last minute.)
Then she hired a real honest-to-goodness general contractor who has an actual dedicated crew. John and I have a reasonably competent and experienced carpenter who is capable of hiring a plumber or electrician when he needs one (actually, a week or three after he needs one). And he hired a tile guy who shows up a few times a week most weeks, for part of the day…for nearly two months!
Nothing like having a full crew! Wow, look at that!
Emily’s remodel is going a mile a minute and what a disruption it is! She is under no illusion that her house is occupiable.
Her family of 5 spent the first week with a friend. Then they discovered they needed to completely redo all the electrical in the entire house (it’s a beautiful, historic home). So at the last minute they got a hotel room, but it was “leaf peeping” season in New England, so all they could find was one small, cramped, miserable room. I have no idea how they managed to survive with all three little girls and Emily working until midnight every night…it must have been a nightmare. They were all jammed together in that little room for nine days.
Then they flew out to Ann Arbor to visit our family out there. Now they are in a larger hotel suite – that includes laundry facilities, yay for laundry!
She doesn’t have pictures of the interior but you can imagine it’s fully gutted. They’re building an addition, completely redoing the kitchen, moving various walls around and rewiring the whole house.

I’m sorta bummed. Originally we were going to drive to Tucson this afternoon (Thursday) for a long weekend. But a storm is coming and we’re getting high winds, and it’s hard to drive the camper van in a combination of headwinds and crosswinds.
We like to take the van because there’s no working kitchen in the house, and the van at least has a minimal kitchenette with a sink, cooler, microwave, and hotplate. But even if we took one of the other cars, it’s still a long and miserable drive in the wind.
John has to be at work in-person in Albuquerque on Monday, so we’re just going to wait and not go until the weekend before Thanksgiving, when we can spend two weekends plus the week of Thanksgiving out there.
Remodel progress is continuing to be excruciatingly slow. Our floor tile arrived on September 2, and finally now, two months later, it’s all been installed except for the laundry room, back patio, and the master bathroom.
The cabinets also arrived in early September, but they couldn’t be installed until the floor tile was done in the kitchen, so it wasn’t until a few weeks ago that we discovered two of the base cabinets were the wrong size and needed reordered.
Then our contractor called me this morning and started out, “You won’t believe this, but…”
That’s never good. So yeah, remember how they shipped the wrong size cabinets for the two corners in the kitchen, and we had to re-order? The new ones came in last Wednesday, but my contractor was on vacation until Thursday or Friday and then it was the weekend and then Halloween or whatever; he finally tried to put them in yesterday (Wednesday a week later), and guess what? The two new corner cabinets are still the wrong size! Seriously. The’ve shipped us the wrong size corner cabinets twice now. So we’re reordering again, and now we have to wait again.
The problem is, we can’t fabricate the countertop until the base cabinets are installed. And countertop fabrication takes awhile. So we’re still at least a month out on countertop. At least. Meanwhile our countertop slabs are languishing in Phoenix, while we pay storage fees, waiting until we’re ready for it.
So here I sit, stuck in Albuquerque with a wind storm coming, which is guaranteed to trigger a migraine. I cannot seem to figure out what to do to prevent getting migraines during and after wind storms, usually 2-5 days of migraines. It’s not as bad in Tucson. It’s not perfect there, but it’s certainly better. I definitely have more migraines in Albuquerque. The high elevation may make the weather changes more impactful, I don’t know. The elevation at our house here in Albuquerque is about 5,500 ft, which is over a mile high.
Now that we’re not going to Tucson this weekend after all, I’m going to have to hope my contractor will water my remaining houseplants for me. The smaller ones, which can’t go as long without water, have already died.
After getting depressed about my neglected and dying houseplants, I bought a few small ones that I can take back and forth with me. Albuquerque tends to be cold and very dry in the winter, so I’ve got them set up near the fireplace with a little indoor plug-in fountain for humidity and a grow light now that the days are short.
They’re in a plastic bin for easy transport. When we go to Tucson for 10 days for Thanksgiving, they are going with me. I’ve had it with my plants dying.
Speaking of houseplant grow lights, I should probably get out one of my therapy lights for myself. I used to use them to help my mood when I worked in a windowless office in Santa Fe. During the winters I spent up there, it would be dark when I went to work and dark when I got off work. With no windows, I wasn’t getting any natural light during the work week at all. I don’t function well without natural light. That’s the primary reason I left the Pacific northwest for the desert southwest way back in 2001!
So yes, a full-spectrum therapy light would be a good idea. I own at least three of them. But I don’t know where they are. I think maybe they’re in the garage in Tucson? At first I was making lists and spreadsheets and taking photos of closets, trying to remember where everything is. But I’ve given up. I just don’t know what is where anymore. And I’m not going to know until we’re down to only one house and I can find places for everything.
Meanwhile I’m continuing to try to direct this remodel from afar. My main goal today is to figure out whether the latest potential tiles for the wall around the tub in the hall bathroom are going to work. I had planned to bring the tile samples we bought over the weekend to our contractor when we went out to Tucson today, but since we’re not going, I’m just sending him tons of photos instead.
Now you know why I keep posting about past vacations and such – there just isn’t much fun to write about going on here in Albuquerque at the moment!
When we were first buying the house in Tucson I kept saying, “It’s only 10 degrees hotter there”. And that’s true during the season we were most worried about – summer. Albuquerque is very nearly as hot as Tucson at the hottest time in the summer. But it turns out Albuquerque has bigger temperature swings over the rest of the year. The weather difference is closer 15 degrees to 20 degrees during the shoulder seasons and in the winter.
The afternoon temperatures over the weekend in Tucson were in the high 80’s. It was hot! We got back last night, and here we are in Albuquerque on this lovely Monday morning; it’s freezing. Literally.
John is supposed to be part of a group outdoor picture for an award his team won at work. If I remember correctly, that photo is supposed to be happening at about exactly when I took this video just now. (In case you don’t like clicking on links, it’s just 20 seconds of hail, you won’t miss much.)
So that was our welcome back to Albuquerque this morning.
We had wind on the way back yesterday. I have an excellent app for predicting winds in a visualization that works well for me. Here is the prediction on Thursday, for the wind on the following Sunday (which was yesterday, when we drove back to Albuquerque). It’s a great app, it’s called windfinder.
I hate driving the van in the wind. It’s a big nuisance going to Tucson frequently, and it’s probably not strictly necessary. But we feel better after we’ve done some yard work, cleaned the pool filters, checked on the drip irrigation, and tidied up the chaos in the house. For example, there was an entire full “big gulp” of coffee growing mold in the living room. I didn’t even know coffee could grow mold, but I guess if given long enough, it can. I don’t understand why they can’t pick up after themselves a little better. I think the problem is the tile guy. I really can’t wait until the floor tiling is done. It is such an invasive job, impacting every square inch of the house.
I went through the box of books that were ruined in the kitchen flood when they were doing the kitchen demolition work in August, and ordered the ones I wanted to replace. Ugh, $280 worth of cookbooks (actually we lost more than that, but $280 was the total for the ones I decided were worth replacing). We also lost a small flokati rug to mildew. I took it to Albuquerque to try to save it, but was unsuccessful.
I spent a lot of time getting the thick construction dust off my houseplants, which should have been temporarily covered in plastic during the drywall work. My contractor said he’d water them for me, but houseplants are not really his focus right now. I’ve brought the smaller ones back to Albuquerque and are hoping the larger ones will handle an intermittent watering plan. Very intermittent!

The main reason for going out this weekend was to check on the completion of the screened porch. We had our back porch screened in by a company that specializes in that kind of work. Our contractor wasn’t involved in it, so we needed to go out and approve the work ourselves before paying the remainder on the invoice.
We are super happy about our new screened-in porch. As you have heard me mention (repeatedly), the mosquitos in Tucson are a problem. Tucson seems tropical to us – less dry than we expected, particularly in the summer when there’s significantly more rain than in Albuquerque. The tropical vibe comes complete with tiny aggressive tropical “tiger” mosquitos. They are small, fast and impossible to hear. And they bite all day long during the summer. The porch will allow us to enjoy the outdoors without the bugs. We already love it. The entire big panel on the left rolls up with a remote control, so if we want to open it up during the bug-free winters we can.
There are just a few tiny cracks along the bottom where mosquitos could get in, but those will be covered once we tile the patio floor.
John wants to put a doggie door in the screen door, but I think it would end up being a mosquito door. Plus, Biska already has a doggie door in and out of the house via our bedroom. She doesn’t need to be going in and out of the screened porch on every whim. She doesn’t need to be in the screened porch area at all. If we’re out there and we want her to join us, we can always let her in ourselves.
Meanwhile, on the inside of the house, we continue to be happy with the quality of the work itself, unhappy with the unnecessary mess, and disappointed with how long it’s taking. Luckily, the kitchen is starting to look somewhat less scary.
Unfortunately the cabinet company shipped two cabinets the wrong size, so we are waiting for replacement cabinets to arrive before our contractor can install them. Here you can see a corner base cabinet isn’t long enough:
It wasn’t my contractor’s mistake or my kitchen designer’s mistake. It was a factory mistake. The replacement cabinets should arrive soon. It’s always something.
I had a friend who wanted to come in early November – oops, we’re not going to be ready after all. Callan and Chirstina wanted to come at Thanksgiving, but I don’t think we’ll be ready for that either. Maybe Christmas? We’re definitely not ready for guests yet. Here’s the guest room, complete with its own toilet. Oh wait. I guess that one’s not usable, lol.
It’s a trip trying to figure out what is and is not useable. For example, the remodel of the master bathroom hasn’t started yet, and the original sinks are still in place and should be working. But for some reason they have been disconnected and aren’t usable. You would never know just from looking at them.
Yeah, that is one ugly set of sinks. At first we were thinking we could get away with just changing out that vanity and removing a similar one on the other side, but it’s looking more and more like we’re going to end up gutting the whole master bathroom. It’s very small and an extremely poor use of space. It will always be small, but we want to make it more useable, and able to accommodate a wheelchair.
Last time we went to Tucson the house was so torn up and unusable that we parked the van in the street in front of our house and lived 100% out of our van, including sleeping in the van at night. This time we were able to put together our bed in the master bedroom, utilize the pool bathroom, and use the new screened porch for our kitchen-dining and hang out space. Here’s our temporary kitchen on the back porch:
The cooler from the van is plugged in on the right, and we have a countertop microwave that came out of our old kitchen, which didn’t have a built-in microwave. There’s no sink on the porch, so we have to go out to the pool bathroom for water. It’s currently the only fully working bathroom. At least there is one!
The pool bathroom, by the way, is a bathroom that was added onto the back of the garage and is accessed from the backyard. My contractor calls it a cabana bath, but there isn’t a cabana, just a small addition onto the garage. You cannot access the pool bathroom from inside the house. It’s specifically for using when you’re using the pool. It’s also not heated or air conditioned, but I plan to put a portable unit in there, plus a fan. In the summer it can get so hot and humid you could pass out in there. There’s an idea. Add a bench and we have a sauna.
Ok, enough about the remodel! In other news, while in Tucson I managed to make it to my hairdresser. I don’t go on a very regular basis. I think the last time was sometime in July. I had him cut it pretty short because knowing me, I won’t have it done again for awhile.
I noticed the hair salon had brick accent walls.
I’m seemingly unable to stop thinking about remodel design ideas nowadays, no matter where I am or what I’m doing!
