Of course our central heating chose the coldest day of the year – the coldest few days in several years – to crap out. I mean, when else would it quit? Right?
I know you’re all like, Kristina, you’re in Tucson, how bad can it be? Well…I am grateful I’m in Tucson. But we’re getting hard freezes at night, and this house isn’t insulated. At all. I think I’ve mentioned that, but my apologies, it’s quite relevant so I’m going to say it again. We’re not insulated. Our exterior walls are solid adobe brick coated on the inside by a thin layer of lath and plaster. There’s no empty wall between studs where the insulation could go. And our ceiling/roof is one solid unit of 5″ thick wood timbers. No crawl space, no gap whatsoever for insulation, it’s just wood between us and the sky (yes, rainstorms are loud).
So like I said, I’m freezing. Luckily, what is saving me is the mini-split in our family room. It was originally an Arizona room (a 3-walled space open to the backyard, used for sleeping before air conditioning). When the previous owners added the fourth wall to create an interior space, they added a mini-split since the central heating didn’t extend into this room. Thank goodness for the mini-split. It is admirably keeping the family room, kitchen and dining area reasonably warm.
Also I’m wearing two sweaters and sitting on an electric blanket. Also I’m having a hot flash, but that’s an entirely different subject. OMG, I get them so bad. Even when my house is 61º. It’s ridiculous. But I still love Tucson and I still can’t wait for summer, because I’m just not a winter kind of gal.
Here’s pictures of the frost on top of our cars at 8:00 yesterday morning when I was on my way to volunteer at the botanical garden. Our task at the botanical garden yesterday was to collect and toss into the compost hundreds of potted poinsettias that were lining the pathways and had frozen. It was sad!
This next one is disorienting, looking up into the sky, but it’s the top front of our van, lit by the rising sun behind me. The other cars were too low to yet be in the sun.
That is the top of the Mini Cooper, and I wasn’t tall enough to see what exactly I was taking. I just reached up, angled my phone down, and hit the photo button a few times. I thought the pictures turned out pretty well for blind shots.

When Laura and I saw this intersection (photo below), we immediately recognized the location. We were there over 20 years ago, and got caught in a crime scene.
Laura and I were living in Ventura, down the coast from San Luis Obispo, south of Santa Barbara. We had a friend, a colleague of mine named Phil, who lived near San Luis Obispo, in Los Osos. We drove into San Luis Obispo with Phil, with plans to go to a Japanese restaurant for lunch.
Phil had recently returned from working in Japan for a couple of years and very much missed the country. Laura was in high school, taking Japanese with the intention of living in Japan after she went to college (which she successfully did for five years, as many of you know). So they had that interest in common and we talked happily about Japan. We parked in the parking lot you can see right there on the corner.
As we were getting out of the car and starting to walk to the Japanese restaurant, there was suddenly a big commotion. A man was chasing another man, who was carrying a guitar case. The man with the guitar fell to the ground, and his pursuer stood over him, shouting. The moment the guitar man started to get up, his pursuer kicked him repeatedly and shouted at him to stay down.
We stopped, concerned and confused. It was unclear who was the bad guy in the scenario. I initially assumed it was the pursuer, but oddly he would cease his shouting and kicking as long as the guitar man lay still on the pavement. The instant the guitar man would attempt to get up, the pursuer would kick and scream at him until the guitar man lay still again. Guitar man’s pursuer would not even allow him to lift his head from the pavement.
A small crowd formed a wide, wary circle around them, watching, unsure of what was happening and unsure whether or how to intervene. A whispered rumor speculated that the guitar man had been caught shoplifting by the shop owner.
This was shortly before cell phones were common and we did not yet own one ourselves. But someone must have called the authorities, because soon we could hear the sirens. Inexplicably, emergency services stopped half a block away. We looked around for the police, but no one approached our little group. The pursuer still stood vigilant and commanding over the sprawled guitar man. We waited.
Someone broke away to fetch the authorities. Hello, we’re over here! Still no one came for what seemed like a long time, but it was probably only a minute or two. The small crowd stood patiently, watching the pursuer watch his downed man. We were still unclear what was going on but somehow felt like our presence was helpful.
Then a new, highly charged rumor quietly circulated. The guitar man had just stabbed someone less than a block away, and the pursuer had witnessed it and chased him down. This new and much more shocking rumor turned out to be the truth. A man had been stabbed.
We were not detained for questioning because we did not see the stabbing. But the whole area was roped off, and the cars were not allowed to leave the parking lot. We ended up spending all afternoon wandering around downtown San Luis Obispo, waiting for our car to be released.
Shortly after leaving the parking lot on foot, we saw the man who was stabbed from a distance, and I had a fleeting thought that it was the first time I had ever seen a dead person. We had not been told that he had died, and the emergency crew appeared to still be working to save his life, but somehow I just knew immediately that he was no longer alive.
Twenty years later my friend and colleague, who was with Laura and I that day, has also now passed away, of cancer in 2020. Both of my two primary life coaching mentors have died of cancer; Elaine in 2016 and Phil in 2020. I learned a lot from them both and still think of them sometimes.
It was a somber memory on this gray day. So much has happened in our lives since Laura and I lived in that area together 20 years ago. But Laura and I soon shook off the memories and wandered on, enjoying what has been for decades a really cool little college downtown.
I was cold and bought this great little brimmed warm hat, complete with a pom-pom on the back. I could feel it bouncing cheerfully like a ponytail when I walked.
We bought Turkish delight for John and Alex at this shop.
I didn’t realize these chandeliers were for sale until I was back home and saw a price tag as I was cropping the picture. Darn, I could have spent eleven thousand for a chandelier for our remodel project! (Ha-ha).
Back at the airbnb, it was beautiful when the sun decided to peek out of the clouds.
The back lot was often full of deer, which was great entertainment for the dogs. (Separated by at least two fences, luckily.)
We had an enjoyable, if cool and wet vacation, and it was good to see Laura for her birthday.
On our first full day in Atascadero, Laura and I checked out the small downtown. I went into a baby store with my sister in my thoughts, but I ended up buying a little toy camper with a puppy in the window.
The second day we went up to Paso Robles and Lake Nacimiento. We were unimpressed with the lake, and neither of us took any pictures. It’s probably beautiful in the summer, but not so much in the January rains. I took this photo of the water streaming down the hill along the side of the road.
The following day we stayed closer to home and took a walk in the rural neighborhood of our airbnb to look at the flooding.
In this next one, you can see a fence in the foreground that has collapsed.
This next house reminds me of where I grew up in rural Oregon. It was beautiful in the summer, but it was generally a poor area, and most of my memories are wet, cold, and muddy.
A big difference between my childhood neighborhood and this one, is the prices in this neighborhood are very high. There are many large and beautiful homes.
Even the small, old houses are situated on valuable California acreage. There would have been a time when the smaller of these houses would have been affordable, but that time has long since past.

I know we saw this neighborhood at its worst, and I’m sure it’s idyllic in the summer, but ultimately, I was not impressed.
In January, Biska and I drove two days to meet Laura in Atascadero, a small town just north of San Luis Obispo, near the central coast of California. Well, I drove. Biska slept. The first night we spent in Joshua Tree National Park.
We went for a short walk but it was cold, windy and miserable. Biska hung outside for a little while, but pretty soon we both just retreated into the van. The wind howled and the van rocked back and forth.

It was a beautiful morning and we enjoyed our morning walk. I wished I could have stayed longer; I was not looking forward to our drive through Los Angeles.
The drive through Los Angeles went ok, and then we hit the grapevine, which is a twisty section of the interstate that goes up and over the mountains between Santa Clarita and Bakersfield. Due to mudslides, the multi-lane freeway narrowed to one lane. We crept up the mountain behind the trucks, laboring at 5 miles an hour for a long time.
I wouldn’t typically have even been on the grapevine to get to Atascadero, but my preferred route up the coast on 101 was closed in several places due to mudslides. I ended up going all the way up to Highway 46 and then west to Paso Robles.
We were originally going to camp at Cerro Alto campground, halfway between Atascadero and Morro Bay. We canceled those reservations when the flooding started about a week before our trip. It was a good thing we canceled, because soon that highway closed.
After canceling our camping reservations, we considered canceling the entire trip because the weather forecast was so bad. But the trip was Laura’s birthday present, and Laura had already gotten the time off, so we forged ahead with our vacation. I was able to find a last-minute airbnb for a very good rate. It was discounted steeply from their usual rates. I expect they had a cancelation.

It was a relief to get there! I was glad we hadn’t canceled the trip. It was a great little airbnb, with a fenced yard for the dogs. Here’s the view from the back deck when we arrived late that afternoon.

The only weird thing about the airbnb was the laundry outside in the rain.
On the second or third day we suddenly realized we no longer had hot water. The owner came over immediately, and plugged the hot water heater into a different outlet with an extension cord.
It seemed pretty sketchy to me, but it worked.
The inside was cozy. I brought a quilt to throw over the couch so Biska didn’t shed all over it.
And the dogs each had their beds.
We were lucky to find a dog-friendly spot out of the rain.
After numerous delays, we were supposed to finally get our countertop installed between Christmas and New Years, which would have worked great. John wanted to be there for the installation, and we spent that entire week in Tucson.
But of course they were delayed. Again. They rescheduled for early January. Only a weeks delay, but it required John to make a special trip out to Tucson from Albuquerque, and turn around and go back out to Albuquerque right after the installation. But it’s finally in. Thank goodness! We bought those countertop slabs back in August!
This is the hall bath.
The countertop matches the cabinets very well. But I’m concerned that the countertop/cabinet combo in the bathroom doesn’t match the white and blue tiles we chose. I’m not quite sure it all ties together. But John really liked those wall tiles. As we all know, John has trouble finding tiles he likes. And I wasn’t about to hunt all through town trying to match a sample tile that I PAINTED MYSELF, like I did for our floors.
So it’s just going to have to be good enough. I don’t think it clashes. It’s just that the dark blue accent tiles seem a bit random. It would have been better if they had pulled more directly from the colors in the quartzite countertop. I can try to tie in the blue accent tiles with my choices in soap dishes, towels, wall art, and other accessories. It’ll be ok. The tile is really cool. You can see how textured it is where the light shines on it in the top left corner of this picture.
I guess if we end up really bothered by the lack of coherence with the dark blue accent tiles, we can pull them out and redo those sections. It wouldn’t be very hard to pop those tiles out and just use the white ones. What would be difficult is finding a different tile to match the white ones because they are unusual. The blue tiles have the same smooth, raised pattern as the white ones, and that’s hard to find.
Here they’re bringing in a large cut slab on a special cart that can carry it on its edge and then raise it up flat.
This slab of quartzite weighs about 300 pounds and is brittle.
John was glad he was able to be there to watch it all. I was nervous and grumpy, afraid something would go wrong, but he was excited to have it finally being installed.
This next picture is of the double sinks in the master bathroom. We will eventually completely redo this bathroom too, but not yet. Probably not until this summer sometime. We have several sets of guests coming this spring, and don’t want to be in the middle of big projects during those visits. We need to save up our dollars anyway, so we’re going to take a break for a bit. We’re just going to install the faucets and call it good enough for now.
Later we will do the rest of the master bathroom, new solid wood doors for the bedrooms and bathrooms, tile the floor of the screened in porch, a gas insert and Mexican tile hearth for the fireplace, exterior stucco on the back of the house (just over the wood addition, not over the burnt adobe brick), some roof work including a foam roof and solar panels, some additional exterior garden walls, a garden shed, and other landscaping such as paths, lighting, and pergolas – also with solar panels. And lots more plants. So lots to do yet. That’ll be stage two.
Meanwhile, we’re pleased with how well the countertop matches the cabinets, and the kitchen will look even better once the backsplash is in. I’m not worried about the kitchen tying together – it will all coordinate well. We’re using thin-cut adobe brick for the backsplash. The brick will tie in well with the rust colored veins in the quartzite, as well as the terracotta floor tiles.

I find it helps to show a few photos to those helping us when we’re shopping for materials, or else they assume we want what’s in style right now.

That is admittedly a nice photo. What’s in style is pretty and it works in many different types of architecture, but it’s so different from what we’re trying to do! You can see our challenge, when 95% of the materials available are to create spaces like in the photo above. And although it’s nice, it’s just not our goal. We’re trying to bring out the character in our particular house, and of the southwest desert in general.
I used to wonder why old people always talked about how fast time was flying. It seemed like a dumb thing to say. More pointless even than commenting on the (obvious) weather. But I get it now. It’s startling – scary even – how quickly time goes by when you’re old. It’s sad, confusing and alarming. So we joke around and laugh it off, make it a banal topic, a meaningless random bit of commentary, but inside we’re like, holy fuck, in a blink of an eye it’ll be time to die.
Sorry, was that not the New Year’s message you had hoped from me? I firmly believe that if we are always and only cheery on the outside, the difficult stuff ferments on the inside. Let it out in equal measure and we will be able to cope with the both the wonder and the terror of our existence.

John and I spent New Year’s afternoon at the Desert Museum on the west side of Tucson with Dan and Dawn. We had a very good time, and then we went out for sushi together.
Then we all went home and went to bed at a sensible hour. Because we’re old!
On the other hand, Laura and Alex went to San Francisco with friends.
Alex is masked because he had a cold. I think this is a positive change in our culture due to what we learned during the pandemic. If everyone masked when they had a cold, there would be many fewer colds in the world! The practice was already common in Asia. It’s good to see our country adopting that sensible custom.
They stayed the night at a fancy hotel within walking distance from their New Year’s Eve event, so they didn’t have to drive home in the middle of the night.
