As you remember from the last two posts, Laura and Alex went to Italy, and most unfortunately, Laura got covid. They tried to extend their stay in Parma because she was hardly able to travel, but they were unable to extend their reservations, and had to continue on with their itinerary. Here’s her text messages and pictures from the last few days, starting with Friday, Oct. 7.
“Made it to Cinque Terre. Traveling is miserable, I am utterly exhausted”
“This is my new view of Italian scenery”
“We’re on the ocean now. I think it’s really pretty, but I haven’t left my room since we got here”
“I’m lying in bed while Alex does the hike along the coastal cliffs between villages. This is what I was most looking forward to on this trip, I’m so disappointed”
On Saturday she wrote, “We extended our stay here, so we’re skipping the next place, Livorno, and will just go from here to Rome on the 12th. Maybe I’ll improve enough to hike at some point, but I’m not hopeful. The fatigue is so bad today! Every time I do anything, like make breakfast or shower, my head starts to hurt more and I have to lie down for a bit.”
“We very slowly walked to the beach and Alex rented us some lounge chairs, and I just lied there for a few hours”
On Sunday she wrote, “Fingers crossed, knock on wood, I seem to be recovering ”
“This small yellow house is our Airbnb. It was advertised as a “fisherman’s cottage”.
“It’s right next to the trailhead for the trail that goes to the neighboring villages. We’re in village #5 of the 5 (Monterosso). Here is Alex about to hike to village #4 (Vernazza), taken from my bedroom window”
“Today Alex hiked to Vernazza and I took the train and met him there for lunch. Then we both took the train to village #3 (Corniglia), explored a bit, and then he hiked all the way back while I took the train back. I’m exhausted, but also glad because I wouldn’t have been able to do even a fraction of this just yesterday. Alex did all of his hiking in flip-flops because he’s got really bad blisters from the only other pair of shoes he has, even though there’s a bunch of signs everywhere saying no flip-flops on the trails and the police can ticket you for it”
Then Monday she writes, “We’re getting a bit bored of this area. My original itinerary would have been perfect, had I not gotten sick. It was the right decision to extend our stay here, but man is it frustrating”
“Today we took the train to the first and second villages, Riomaggiore and Manarola. As you can see, it was more of the same ”
“Alex found some avocado toast and made fun of himself for being a millennial”
“I found a shop with gelato, crepes, and cannoli, all gluten & lactose free”
Then today, Tuesday, she wrote, “I hiked to the neighboring town! And back I’m so glad to be feeling better. And also kind of grieving the time I lost. Trying to focus on enjoying right now, but I keep having this thought, like, “This espresso at this outdoor cafe is so good. Just think of all the good espressos I missed out on while I was sick…” And so my emotions are going from super happy to crying back to happy very quickly”
Last post I wrote that Laura had gotten covid in Italy. Here’s an update about how she’s doing. I’ve left her quotes as she texted them, even though (understandably) there’s a few typos. Everything beyond this paragraph is quotes from her text messages. This is what she sent me on Thursday (Oct. 6).
“No fever dreams last night. My headache is better but cough seems to be getting worse, and my throat hurts a lot now. I’ll be trying to find nice soft today, I’m sure.”
“I’m Parma we have been enjoying Parmesan cheese (!!), cured meat, and other tasty dishes. I’ve been rallying at meal times to get out of the Airbnb to eat (masked as much as possible and outdoors seating only), and snap photos of the town while we walk to and from the restaurant”
“Parma has a university, so it has a very young and lively atmosphere. There are enough foreigners that the restaurants mostly have English menus for us, but it’s not overrun by tourists like the other places we’ve been to. That reminds me, there were so many German tourists at Peschiera del Garda! I swear I heard more German than Italian while we were there.”
“I know one of those photos of Alex looks like we’re indoors, but it’s actually a courtyard with an open roof and an open wall behind me”
“Here’s the door to the building our Airbnb in Parma is in. Makes me think of Alice in Wonderland!”
Laura says, “We had some tasty pizza for lunch. Alex was looking for a kebab place he spotted when we arrived last night, and I was like, kebabs for my first meal in Italy, seriously??”
Then she sent some very cool pictures:

She says, “A thunderstorm passed overhead, pretty briefly, while we were at the colosseum. When we walked back to the hotel, a tree had fallen across the sidewalk where we had walked earlier”
Uh wow, good thing they didn’t get hit by a tree on their first day in Italy!
Next we got some sunnier pictures:
She says, “Today we went to a chocolate museum & factory in Perugia. It did not live up to my Willy Wonka dreams, but it was still interesting and we got a bunch of chocolate. We also continue to learn new things about public transportation in Italy ”
She says, “Here’s all about how they make chocolate. In Italian. I thought John might find it interesting ” For those of you who don’t know, John is quite fond of chocolate. To put it mildly!
The next morning more pictures come in.
She says, “We are now in Peschiera del Garda (Peschiera of Lake Garda). In the first hour, I probably exclaimed “Freaking adorable!” at least 5 times”
A day or two later she says, “There is something here at the lake that stings/bites me, only on non-exposed skin (the heck?), feeling like a needle prick that then fades in ~5 min leaving me to wonder if I imagined it, only to return as an itchy bump two days later. There are also regular mosquitoes.”
Also on Tuesday she said, “Today we took a ferry on the lake and went to a spa with thermal hot springs water and saw this ridiculous gold car.”
Then yesterday she said, “We’re in Parma after a long day of traveling because trains were a mess. And I’m sick ugh. In good news, this Airbnb is a whole apartment and I can have my own room, so I don’t have to sleep with a mask on.”
I gather she is sick and Alex is not, and she’s trying to keep him from getting sick.
She said, “They don’t hardly mask anywhere, just like 10% of people are masking on trains and stuff. Alex and I have been pretty careful this whole time, but I managed to catch something anyway. Started with slight irritation in my lungs, which I thought was because of all the damn smokers here. But it was a persistent tickle yesterday. Woke up this morning with a larger area in my lungs irritated and a bit phlegmy which makes me cough occasionally, headache, and achy legs & back.”
She says, “Our apartment is the top floor, so there’s basically no space for windows.”
“But skylights in every room! This pigeon startled me when I was relaxing earlier ”
Then in the middle of last night (morning for her) she texted with worse news. She says, “I feel so much worse today. Fever, completely congested, and worst headache ever”, and then, “Confirmed, it is covid.”
We are so sorry to hear that Laura is confined to a room in Italy with covid, with pigeon butts for a view!
Off topic aside – I can’t help but notice that her attic apartment in Italy has the same type of ceiling as we have in Tucson, and the skylight is nicely and simply framed, unlike a set of old skylights in the Arizona room at my Tucson house. I will need to show this to my contractor.
Then this morning (mid-day for her), “I really like Parma and am disappointed that I’m missing it while I stay in my room all day. We tried to extend our stay, but this place is booked after us. So tomorrow we’ll go to Cinque Terre, where thankfully we also have two bedrooms.” And, “Thank god I haven’t lost my sense of taste! Lol”
I’m glad she still has her sense of taste – and sense of humor! But I am worried with her overseas with covid.
Some of you may remember, in the spring of 2021 we towed our sailboat to Florida and sailed in the Florida Keys for several days.
When our vacation was over, we pulled the boat out of the water.
We left it on the Florida Keys in dry dock – on its trailer in a storage lot. The idea was that we’d fly back reasonably often to sail in the Keys (there not being good sailing in either Albuquerque or Tucson).
The problem with that idea is that I haven’t flown anywhere since our mad dash to Boston to get my cancer surgery done in February of 2020. John has flown once or twice for work, but it has not been a pleasant experience. We haven’t been back to Florida since we left our boat out there.
And yep, now it’s hurricane season. Along came hurricane Ian, which made landfall a few days ago. John was tracking it obsessively, but there was just no way to know. Of all the technology available, real-time google street view is not up and running yet. The staff at the storage yard had evacuated, so they didn’t know any more than we did.
John wants you to see this video. I almost never post a picture or video that we didn’t take ourselves, but here is a video of the hurricane he got off the internet. It’s less boring than my own videos, I admit that.

We spent all weekend assuming our boat was a goner, but yesterday John was able to confirm – it had survived! The storm was very localized – it was hit or miss. Ft. Myers suffered, but Big Pine Key, where our boat is, got high winds but did not sustain water damage.
So here’s our plan. In December we’re going to drive down to San Carlos, a touristy suburb of Guaymas, Mexico, on a small bay on the east side of the Gulf of California. It’s only a 5-6 hour drive due south from Tucson (compared to 5 days to drive to Florida). We’re going to check it out and look into the marinas down there.
If the San Carlos and Guaymas area looks good, then in February we’re going to drive out to Florida, retrieve our boat, and take it down to Mexico. It’s been a real challenge for us to figure out where to leave our boat so we’ll use it!
That’s what we get for insisting on having a sailboat while living in the desert.
Now that I’m feeling better and our remodel is well underway, I’ve decided to start building my life coaching business back up. I still have a few clients, but not very many.
I have a new website, which I created so I can have a URL (website address) that includes “ASD”, which stands for Autism Spectrum Disorder, instead of Asperger Syndrome, which has become a dated term for a couple of reasons. The primary reason is back in 2013, the terms Asperger and Asperger’s Syndrome were removed from the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual) that psychologists use, and Asperger traits were included within the diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder. The other reason has to do with the declining reputation of Hans Asperger himself. The bottom line is, the word “Asperger” is out, and my old website that I originally put up in 2001 is called coachingasperger. Oops. It was great for awhile, but time for an update.
When I realized I wanted a new website, I was lucky to be able to buy the URL “coachingasd.com” before it was taken (asdcoaching has been taken). Then I got cancer and everything got put on hold.
Recently, the daughter of a good friend of mine helped me get the new site up. Thanks to her, I was able to get it up fairly affordably. Now I need to advertise my new website, because websites aren’t found if they aren’t advertised.
This blog is a good example. I don’t advertise this blog, so no one outside of my friends and family knows it’s here. It is theoretically possible to find because it’s public, but if you put “turning 51” into a Google search bar you could scroll through pages and pages of results and you’re not going to find this blog. That’s assuming you even knew what it’s called. It would be even harder to find if you weren’t looking for it.
This blog is completely hidden in plain sight. Which is fine with me. I have no aspirations to have strangers reading my blog. This blog is for you – my friends and family. If a few others stumble across it, fine, I don’t mind. But I wouldn’t be comfortable with a large readership.
My life coaching website, however, is different. That needs to be seen by lots and lots of people before someone will actually decide to email me asking for life coaching sessions. And my new site is not going to be seen by lots of people unless I’m advertising it.
Initially after getting my new website set up, I made the mistake of redirecting my old Asperger site to my new ASD site, thinking that would bring traffic to my new site, because my old site ranks fairly high in google searches and gets a reasonably large number of clicks for a small business like mine. I’m not exactly sure why that didn’t work. The autoforwarding was working, but for some reason my old site was suddenly no longer getting clicks, so there was no one to forward to my new site.
My theory is Google dropped my old site out of their search results because they detected the autoforwarding. I can imagine why they might want to filter out websites that are autoforwarding so customers aren’t misdirected to nefarious sites. I’m just guessing, but that seems like what happened.
As soon as I figured that out, I stopped the autoforward. Now I have both websites out there as stand-alone’s. I have the same information in the text on the sites, just one of them uses the term “Asperger” and the other uses “ASD”.
The old Asperger site is now starting to get some traffic again. It ranks reasonably high in Google searches because it’s been out there for 20 years and has been getting regular traffic for a long time. My new ASD website ranks very low because it’s new. Google ranks frequently clicked-on sites much higher than sites that don’t have frequent use. So it becomes a reinforcing feedback loop. The more people click on the site, the higher the site lists in the search results, so even more people click on it.
The science of all that (I’m rolling my eyes, I don’t think it’s a science, but it’s not an art either) – the word for all that – is Search Engine Optimization. I can hire someone, for lots of money, to help me figure that all out. But a lot of it I know how to do myself. I just need to sit down and do it.
For example, I should start an autism-related blog on my website. Google rewards detailed websites that have regularly added content. The problem is, I don’t know what to say. It’s easier for me to tell you about what’s going on in my life than it is to think of autism-related content for my website. But yes, I know how to blog, and I can do that. I just need to start doing that. Unfortunately it’s not just a thing I can do once and be done. It’s something I’ll have to continue to do over time. Have you ever noticed websites that have a blog with just one or two entries? The big companies can hire someone, but your local contractor or dentist is likely to have started a blog and not kept up with it.
I also should start a business Facebook page (gag, barf). I don’t mind getting it set up, but I really ought to say something on a regular basis. Like what? Luckily, I can use the same content for the ASD blog as the ASD Facebook page. I just need to write the content. Week after week!
I also need to do a better job with keywords. Luckily my friend’s daughter, Amy, tagged the pages of my new website with keywords. But I’m the one who wrote the text on the pages, and I need to go through and make sure I mention my keywords frequently.
Once I’ve applied myself and done everything I know to do, if I don’t have the results I want, I can hire someone who knows more than I do. But right now I don’t need anyone telling me I should be blogging on my website. Yeah, I know that. I just need to do it!
I also tried to put an ad up on Psychology Today, because I know they list life coaches, but it turns out they require a mental health credential, which I don’t have. I am a certified coach, but that isn’t a mental health credential. I know that some life coaches are also therapists or have some type of mental health credentials, so that’s probably why I’ve seen life coaches advertising on that site. They must be life coaches with some sort of therapy degree as well. My degree is environmental science. Not close enough.
I can also try to advertise on autism sites. Some of them might be open to advertising.
I tried to set up ads with Google, which is expensive but potentially worth it. However, something is wrong such that Google appeared to think that I was a scammer. My account was immediately suspended the moment I set it up, and the automatic email that I got was accusatory in tone. I tried to go through their appeal process, but I never got to talk with a real person and my appeal was denied with no explanation.
Then I tried to do some internet research to see if I can figure out what about my set-up was causing Google to think I’m not legit, but I couldn’t figure it out. I’m going to get some other things set up first, and then I’m probably going to have to hire someone to help me figure this out.
