As many of you know, along with being a part-time life coach for adults on the autism spectrum, I was also for many years a geographer, cartographer, and environmental scientist.
In the early years, environmental data was sketchy at best and rarely well mapped. I am amazed by what is being done nowadays and hopeful that having accessible, good data will make a difference.
Now we can all see the incriminating data and insist, “Somebody do something about the Permian Basin!”
OMG, Permian Texas ranked #1 (that means worst – in the world). Worse than Russia. Worse than Iran. Worse than China.
And immediately across the state border to the northwest, Permian New Mexico ranked #7.
The long term solution is to reduce our use of oil and gas down to next to nothing. But meanwhile there is a lot that can be done to reduce emissions. The technology involved costs money – but irreparable harm to the climate costs an unfathomable amount of money.
Unfortunately, New Mexico and Texas environmental laws are very industry-friendly. And the laws they do have are not well enforced. When I worked for the Air Quality Bureau in New Mexico, I got an inside look at the enforcement of the air quality laws.
In our department, we were the people who were supposed to be regulating the oil and gas industry in New Mexico. We were the people who were supposed to make sure that our facilities weren’t causing some of the worst emissions in the world.
Sure, we slapped a few fines on some of the worst offenders. But other times the Bureau looked the other way. Why? For one thing, the Bureau Chief was afraid of getting sued by the oil and gas industry. Yes, she told me that, herself, in person, when I objected when she shelved some incriminating data that one of my employees had discovered.
But I honestly can’t blame her. Why should she have to deal with personal lawsuits? Almost everyone who works for the State of New Mexico makes shit for money. I was hiring good, smart scientists with master’s degrees but only allowed to offer barely more than minimum wage. It’s not worth it. The system isn’t set up right. Government employees who are making far less than they could make working in industry, should not have to worry about the oil and gas industry ruining their lives if they are courageous enough to do their job.
And of course, oil and gas is the biggest industry in New Mexico. Without it, the government and all its services would collapse. So you can imagine the conflict of interest there.
We haven’t been back to Tucson since a short trip to check on the remodel October 20-23. Now it’s almost a month later and not much progress has been made. As you may remember, the cabinet factory sent the wrong sized corner cabinets for the kitchen twice – not once, but twice – so that has seriously slowed down the progress in the kitchen.
Meanwhile, I don’t know why our contractor hasn’t been able to do other things that seem to me like he could be doing. For example, I kept thinking he would install the hall bathroom tub, which I bought a long time ago. But then it occurred to me that he’s probably assuming we’re planning to replace the old faucets, and new faucets have not appeared (because I hadn’t thought to order them), therefore, the tub installation hasn’t made it onto his radar yet. That’s the kind of inefficiency I hope to improve with increased communication, which should come with me being out there instead of distracted by other things in Albuquerque.
Now I realize I need to buy faucets, but I don’t know anything about faucets. First I need to research faucets. Yes, I’ve been using faucets my whole life, but I’ve never paid any attention to them other than wondering which way is hot. I don’t want to buy badly-designed faucets out of ignorance, so it’s time I learn something about faucets.
For example, the first thing I saw on the Home Depot website that looked right, said in fine print, “Shower system trim kit only, purchase shower valve separately”. Hmmm, I don’t know what that means. And it’s not a good idea to buy something when the fine print is going over your head!
Our contractor is probably also waiting for us to pick out tile to go around the tub. We did find tile we like, but I haven’t actually bought it yet because I don’t know how much to buy, because I’m not sure how much of the bathroom wall is getting tiled. I just need to go out there, and stand in the bathroom with John and our contractor and talk it through. (This is the waving-arms-and-pointing-as-we-go planning style I was mentioning in my post about Emily’s remodel. Unlike me, she has an actual designer.)
We’ve decided to go out to Tucson at the end of this week with the intention of me staying out there to pay more attention to the project. Our contractor is a really nice guy, understands our taste, does quality work, pays attention to details, and responds well to prompts. Unfortunately he’s not as organized and proactive as he would need to be for me to be able to just sit out in Albuquerque twiddling my thumbs (and posting exercise videos, lol).
That’s why I’m packing up all the stuff I had temporarily moved to Albuquerque in September, and moving back to Tucson. It’s going to be rough living in the midst of a construction zone. But hopefully my planning and organizational skills will help manage this project more efficiently.
Meanwhile here’s some pictures that our contractor sent yesterday. He had just finished putting the knobs and handles I ordered on the cabinets. Some of the cabinets are installed, and some can’t be installed until we get the missing corner cabinets.

He can’t finish this wall until the correct corner base cabinets arrive.
This little bit of brick wall above the window was never plastered over because it was hidden under a soffit. So we decided to leave it exposed. The rest of the brick wall was plastered over, and it would be prohibitively difficult to remove the plaster.
We’ll need to choose backsplash that complements the brick. But we’re not going to look for kitchen backsplash until we have a piece of countertop to take to the stores with us. And the countertop can’t be cut until the cabinets are in. Our countertop is still sitting in the slab yard in Phoenix.
In this next picture our contractor is showing us the countertop lighting under the cabinets.
I don’t see well without a lot of light, so we are paying close attention to lighting. For example, recently we were watching TV and there was gray lettering on top of a dark background, and I literally didn’t even know the words were there. John was like, “You can’t read that?” And I was like, “Read what?” Because of this, I’m starting to avoid driving at night. I’ll see a doctor about it again soon, but I’m guessing it has to do with the fact that they’ve been telling me for awhile that eventually I’ll need cataract surgery.
This next picture is where the peninsula with the stove will go, but it is also waiting for the correct corner base cabinets. I won’t have a stove when I move back in later this week, but at least there is a microwave. My contractor is going to make a temporary plywood countertop so he can install the sink before we arrive.
John’s going with me back to Tucson and can stay through the week of Thanksgiving before needing to return to Albuquerque. I’m glad he will be there to help me get situated. He will also be able to come back and spend more than a week in Tucson at Christmas.

I’m a little self-conscious about this video because my face is crooked due to my headache. It almost looks like I’m sneering sometimes when I’m just thinking. Of course you know that I’m not sneering. Still, it’s hard for me to see the effect of my headache on my face. It’s not something that’s under my control, so I just need to not worry about it. I’m going ahead and posting this video anyway!

John and I are still officially New Mexico residents, unfortunately, because I sure would have liked to have voted in Arizona. As of this afternoon, the governor race is very close.
US Senate race is not quite as close:
US House: I believe we live in District 6, the western section of which includes the east side of Tucson, which is blue where we live. There’s a Republican majority further east where it is more rural. The central and west part of Tucson, and westward, is more strongly democrat, so we live right on the edge. This race is also very close.
Maybe next time there are elections we will be Arizona residents. Who knows?

I’ve actually been debating about whether to put this video up. I usually post whatever I want to on this blog, without much inhibition. For example, I was very open about my cancer treatments in 2020, including subsequent chemo-induced panic attacks. But still, I hesitated when it came to putting up a 30-minute video of me dancing around the living room like a doofus.
I guess I’m feeling a bit self-conscious. I don’t want to overshare. But this video is for you. The only people who read this blog are my good friends and family members. As I keep reminding myself! And a good portion of you have already seen me exercise in the past anyway, or have even joined in!
I originally taped this video for Callan and Chirstina, because we have been exercising together virtually. Although I’m not sure if we’re going to use my videos because Callan and Chirstina currently have a subscription to a paid online class that they like. Their class has a professional instructor who wears goddess-like flowing outfits and somehow manages to dance without getting entangled in them, all the while calling out chirpy and encouraging things like, “You are winning at life!” and “Everyone’s body is perfect!” whereas I stumble around saying alarming things like, “Whoa, I’m dizzy, oh shit, I’m going to fall.” That was towards the end when I was supposed to be in cooldown mode, but sort of wasn’t, and I swung my head around too exuberantly. Don’t worry, I’m fine.
Last night I told my mom about having made these videos, and she encouraged me to post them. She wanted to try exercising to them and she thought you would too. She told me to tell you that! So fine, here is the first video of me impersonating an exercise instructor, lol. These are freestyle, so do them at your own pace and do whatever works for you. I’m not trying to teach any fancy dance moves because I don’t know any.
Also I apologize, it turns out that I’m hard to understand in this first video. I’m talking to you, but who the heck knows what I’m saying. In the future I will try to remember to talk more slowly and closer to the camera, and maybe turn the music down a bit. But I really don’t want to wear a mic, sorry, this is just a family blog. These are not professional videos! They’re just for us.
I’ve taped a couple of others too, which I’ll put up over the next few days. I’m still experimenting with things like sound quality, camera angle, etc.
So remember – just do your own thing, it’s freestyle. Don’t try to mimic exactly what I’m doing. And have fun! Let’s go!

Shortly after Laura and Alex got home from their trip to Italy, Alex found kittens playing in their front yard. They were partially grown juveniles, with no collars.
Their front yard isn’t exactly a safe place for lost pets – it’s a busy street. Laura and Alex got the kittens set up comfortably in the garage, and started looking for their owners. We figured the kittens probably didn’t travel very far, so unless they had been dumped, their owners lived nearby. Laura posted on social media and other local outlets, and put up signs in the neighborhood.
Aren’t they cute? The one above is the female, and the one below is the male. He’s very stunning.
And friendly too!
The next morning Laura and Alex took them to see if they were microchipped. Nope, no chips. And the boy was still intact, so presumably the girl wasn’t fixed either. Laura and Alex realized these juveniles might be old enough to conceive, so they brought the girl inside kept the boy in the garage.
Laura and Alex wanted to get the kittens fixed right away, but the animal control authorities encouraged them to wait and try to find the owners first. Pets are legally property and Laura and Alex could be sued by the owners for trying to keep them, give them away, or do any unalterable procedures without first doing their due diligence to find the owners. According to the authorities, 30 days was sufficient due diligence.
After a few days of not being able to find the owners, they tentatively named them Prince and Boots, because the boy looks princely and the girl has white sock markings on her back paws. Uh-oh, Laura and Alex are getting attached to these cuties!
But then, 5 days after they found the kittens, they found their owners. The owners are neighbors, just a few doors down. She was very appreciative of Laura and Alex’s efforts, and gave Laura this plant as a thank-you gift.
Alex was disappointed and had hoped to keep the kittens.
Laura and Alex have tried to encourage their neighbor to get the kittens fixed, but so far, no luck. Meanwhile, the kittens are still out wandering around.
The boy, whose name turns out to be Chavo, comes and plays with Zane in their backyard. The neighbor’s cat and Laura’s dog get along remarkably well.
Kittens lost, kittens found, kittens shared with the neighbors 🙂
In case you’re bored with the slow, dragging pace of my remodel, here’s a remodel we can all watch in awe.
Emily started after I did, but she is passing me up and heading toward a strong finish in her Boston remodel marathon before I’m even halfway through my leisurely stroll in the southwest desert.
Emily started with an actual architect, who drew up real honest-to-goodness architectural plans. (John and I just talk and point and sketch and change things up until the last minute.)
Then she hired a real honest-to-goodness general contractor who has an actual dedicated crew. John and I have a reasonably competent and experienced carpenter who is capable of hiring a plumber or electrician when he needs one (actually, a week or three after he needs one). And he hired a tile guy who shows up a few times a week most weeks, for part of the day…for nearly two months!
Nothing like having a full crew! Wow, look at that!
Emily’s remodel is going a mile a minute and what a disruption it is! She is under no illusion that her house is occupiable.
Her family of 5 spent the first week with a friend. Then they discovered they needed to completely redo all the electrical in the entire house (it’s a beautiful, historic home). So at the last minute they got a hotel room, but it was “leaf peeping” season in New England, so all they could find was one small, cramped, miserable room. I have no idea how they managed to survive with all three little girls and Emily working until midnight every night…it must have been a nightmare. They were all jammed together in that little room for nine days.
Then they flew out to Ann Arbor to visit our family out there. Now they are in a larger hotel suite – that includes laundry facilities, yay for laundry!
She doesn’t have pictures of the interior but you can imagine it’s fully gutted. They’re building an addition, completely redoing the kitchen, moving various walls around and rewiring the whole house.

I’m sorta bummed. Originally we were going to drive to Tucson this afternoon (Thursday) for a long weekend. But a storm is coming and we’re getting high winds, and it’s hard to drive the camper van in a combination of headwinds and crosswinds.
We like to take the van because there’s no working kitchen in the house, and the van at least has a minimal kitchenette with a sink, cooler, microwave, and hotplate. But even if we took one of the other cars, it’s still a long and miserable drive in the wind.
John has to be at work in-person in Albuquerque on Monday, so we’re just going to wait and not go until the weekend before Thanksgiving, when we can spend two weekends plus the week of Thanksgiving out there.
Remodel progress is continuing to be excruciatingly slow. Our floor tile arrived on September 2, and finally now, two months later, it’s all been installed except for the laundry room, back patio, and the master bathroom.
The cabinets also arrived in early September, but they couldn’t be installed until the floor tile was done in the kitchen, so it wasn’t until a few weeks ago that we discovered two of the base cabinets were the wrong size and needed reordered.
Then our contractor called me this morning and started out, “You won’t believe this, but…”
That’s never good. So yeah, remember how they shipped the wrong size cabinets for the two corners in the kitchen, and we had to re-order? The new ones came in last Wednesday, but my contractor was on vacation until Thursday or Friday and then it was the weekend and then Halloween or whatever; he finally tried to put them in yesterday (Wednesday a week later), and guess what? The two new corner cabinets are still the wrong size! Seriously. The’ve shipped us the wrong size corner cabinets twice now. So we’re reordering again, and now we have to wait again.
The problem is, we can’t fabricate the countertop until the base cabinets are installed. And countertop fabrication takes awhile. So we’re still at least a month out on countertop. At least. Meanwhile our countertop slabs are languishing in Phoenix, while we pay storage fees, waiting until we’re ready for it.
So here I sit, stuck in Albuquerque with a wind storm coming, which is guaranteed to trigger a migraine. I cannot seem to figure out what to do to prevent getting migraines during and after wind storms, usually 2-5 days of migraines. It’s not as bad in Tucson. It’s not perfect there, but it’s certainly better. I definitely have more migraines in Albuquerque. The high elevation may make the weather changes more impactful, I don’t know. The elevation at our house here in Albuquerque is about 5,500 ft, which is over a mile high.
Now that we’re not going to Tucson this weekend after all, I’m going to have to hope my contractor will water my remaining houseplants for me. The smaller ones, which can’t go as long without water, have already died.
After getting depressed about my neglected and dying houseplants, I bought a few small ones that I can take back and forth with me. Albuquerque tends to be cold and very dry in the winter, so I’ve got them set up near the fireplace with a little indoor plug-in fountain for humidity and a grow light now that the days are short.
They’re in a plastic bin for easy transport. When we go to Tucson for 10 days for Thanksgiving, they are going with me. I’ve had it with my plants dying.
Speaking of houseplant grow lights, I should probably get out one of my therapy lights for myself. I used to use them to help my mood when I worked in a windowless office in Santa Fe. During the winters I spent up there, it would be dark when I went to work and dark when I got off work. With no windows, I wasn’t getting any natural light during the work week at all. I don’t function well without natural light. That’s the primary reason I left the Pacific northwest for the desert southwest way back in 2001!
So yes, a full-spectrum therapy light would be a good idea. I own at least three of them. But I don’t know where they are. I think maybe they’re in the garage in Tucson? At first I was making lists and spreadsheets and taking photos of closets, trying to remember where everything is. But I’ve given up. I just don’t know what is where anymore. And I’m not going to know until we’re down to only one house and I can find places for everything.
Meanwhile I’m continuing to try to direct this remodel from afar. My main goal today is to figure out whether the latest potential tiles for the wall around the tub in the hall bathroom are going to work. I had planned to bring the tile samples we bought over the weekend to our contractor when we went out to Tucson today, but since we’re not going, I’m just sending him tons of photos instead.
Now you know why I keep posting about past vacations and such – there just isn’t much fun to write about going on here in Albuquerque at the moment!
