Flagging an Airbnb listing

John and I like southern Florida for the weather (in some seasons, not hurricane season), and all the amazing tropical plants, and the incredibly beautiful shallow water around the keys. Also there’s some darn good food in Miami.

I was looking into vacation rentals on Airbnb when I came across a blatantly racist listing.

At the time that I saw it, this morning, the first line, after “Location, location, location” read, “Step into our sleek and cozy abode in Victoria Park a prominently white neighborhood.” I assume they meant predominately, but whatever, that word is not the problem. The problem is the sentiment and the implicit racism. Not even implicit. That’s explicit.

I flagged the post this morning. Hopefully Airbnb will do something about it. If it hasn’t been corrected by the time you read this, you might want to consider flagging it too. To flag it, just go to the listing, scroll down until you see a small gray flag and the words, “report this listing”.

Then you just go through the very brief questionnaire categorizing the problem (offensive, racist). You can flag it anonymously. Although I’m not sure if you need an Airbnb account in order to flag things, because I already have an account.

I’m not really into political activism, but I think we need to speak out and stand up for other people when we encounter bias in our daily lives. It’s the only way to keep our freedoms for everyone.

Anyway, that was my discouraging news for today. I’m glad we didn’t move to Florida, although we’d still like to visit again someday.

We love the water so much, and have such a great time when we visit.

Meanwhile, I will find something more cheerful to write about soon, I promise!
