The bullsnake who was reluctant to cross the road

This guy was right in the middle of the road as we rounded a curve yesterday. Luckily my snake-spotting instincts are lightening-fast, and my back-seat driving skills are also very impressive, so I was able to get John to stop in time.

Can you believe the size of this guy?

He didn’t want to move. So finally I took a stick and prodded his tail, expecting him to continue on his way. Imagine my surprise when he turned and hissed at me! Sorry I didn’t get a photo of that, I was busy backing off. And I mean “backing off” as in, it’s a good thing there wasn’t a big pile a cactus right there, because I was backing off with a certain velocity, and wasn’t watching what I was backing into. Anything “away from snake” was good enough for me.

Finally he did decide I was right and he would be safer once he finished crossing the road.

There he goes, with me cheering him on, “Good boy, that’s a good boy, there ya go!”
